Fashion hits and misses for January 2017

2017 is upon us! And with the brand new year comes a new wave of style to judge! First up, Kendall Jenner! The supermodel attended the Harper's Bazaar celebration of the 150 Most Fashionable Women event in Los Angeles on Jan. 27 in this barely there lacy black frock. There was a reason the dress was reminiscent of lingerie — it was by lingerie giant La Perla. The intimates brand's foray into red carpet fashion certainly raised eyebrows, but we weren't fans of this excessively sheer slip dress. Jennifer Lopez opted for winter whites at the launch of the Jennifer Lopez and Giuseppe Zanotti Shoe Capsule Collection on Jan. 26. The star donned this Cushnie et Ochs white blazer-style dress at the event, pairing it with light pink metallic strappy heels from her new line. Our favorite element of the crisp, clean look? Jennifer Lopez opted for a glossy nude lip and kept the rest of her makeup so minimal it was almost unnoticeable. She topped things off with one of her favorite hairstyles of the moment — a high ponytail.

Ruby Rose opted for this atrocious orange and black Vionnet gown for the "Resident Evil: The Final Chapter" premiere on Jan. 23. Though it came straight from the runway, the odd draping and Halloween color scheme fell flat.

We hated the snakeskin Alexander McQueen dress Demi Lovato wore to the "Smurfs: The Lost Village" film photocall on Jan. 18. The only thing we hated more than the dress? Those clashing bright-red patent leather flats she wore with it!

The LBD done right! Naomie Harris wore this simple yet impossibly chic Dior dress to the London Critics' Circle Film Awards on Jan. 22 and paired it perfectly with a pop of color in the form of those fuchsia pumps.

A turtleneck underneath a crop top? While it was definitely weather-appropriate for the Sundance Film Festival, we're still a little confused by Zoey Deutch's apparel choice while visiting the Variety Studio at Sundance Presented by Orville Redenbacher's on Jan. 23. The star sported a black turtleneck under a red two-piece crop top and trouser ensemble, and though we applaud her for staying warm, the concept fell flat.

Sunglasses at night? One strike. A weird blue fur stole? Two strikes. Though her little black dress was unoffensive and we were alright with her accessory-of-the-moment choker choice, Paris Hilton lands in the misses for her weird ensemble while out in London on Jan. 26.

So sophisticated! We loved Elle Fanning's take on the menswear trend at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. The star sported a Lanvin blouse underneath a Nomia jacket and trousers at the premiere of "Sidney Hall" on Jan. 25. Paired with a sleek top bun and dramatic makeup, this was one of our favorite looks of the festival!

We're not quite sure what Kelly Rowland was going for with her "Love By The 10th Date" premiere look on Jan. 23. The star paired a wide-brimmed black hat with a bizarre getup by Jamie Wei Huang, which included a striped turtleneck dress under a white blazer with striped detailing and completely mismatched gray suede boots.

Bow down to the airport style queen! Kate Bosworth showed up at LAX clad in a zipped-up fur vest over a cream long-sleeved fitted dress and buckled-up ankle boots before departing Los Angeles on Jan. 25.

Candace Cameron Bure's 2017 People's Choice Awards look completely fell flat. The star wore this matronly Jenny Packham frock, which featured unflattering full sleeves that drowned her top half. Adding to the confusion? The oddly placed keyhole cutout. But even more unfortunate that her outfit selection? Her hair! Take a closer look…

Yikes! Candace Cameron Bure's teased hairstyle was downright puzzling, especially considering her otherwise pretty and put-together makeup.

Kendall Jenner arrived at LAX Airport on Jan. 25 wearing sweats — but they happen to be the coolest sweats on the planet at the moment. The model donned this sweat set from the Vetements x Champion collaboration, pairing it with funky white flats.

A pop of color in the winter is always welcome, but we're unsure about Victoria Beckham's bold hue selection: The star-slash-fashion designer donned a turquoise blouse with bright orange trousers during Paris Fashion Week on Jan. 23. While it wasn't particularly our cup of tea, we do give her props for making a fabulous and colorful statement in January.

Lily-Rose Depp attended the Sidaction Gala Dinner for Spring/Summer 2017 in Paris on Jan. 26 in this cool Chanel getup: a cropped patterned jumpsuit, a black jacket with white piping and a pair of black pumps.

Oh, wow. Where to begin? Brittany Snow arrived at the XYZ Party during the Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 21 in this black, sheer and silver embroidered disaster.

Ruby Rose's amazing red pantsuit by Veronica Beard at the 2017 People's Choice Awards almost made up for her unfortunate frock later on in the month. The "xXx: Return of Xander Cage" star went sans shirt her impeccably tailored suit, and her makeup was just as on-point. Get a better glance next!

Ruby Rose's dark lip and otherwise minimal makeup was the perfect complement to her bold ensemble. We're also digging her simple hairstyle and body chains.

This massive floral ball gown would have been a miss even without the unnecessary leather jacket over top. Jodie Sweetin rocked this unfortunate combo at the 2017 People's Choice Awards, and the only thing that can top the terribleness? That hairdo!

Jodie Sweetin's pompadour and braid hairdo left us, well, nearly speechless. If she hadn't already prepared us with her unfortunate ensemble, we might have been more shocked by the awful hair, but fortunately we didn't expect much after seeing the outfit.

Alessandra Ambrosio went for an all-neutral look at the Bonpoint show during Haute Couture Fashion Week in Paris on Jan. 25. The supermodel sported a nude long-sleeved, form-fitting belted dress underneath a cream coat and finished off the clean look with taupe boots.

We love a good kimono moment, but on the red carpet? Elizabeth Olsen's silky pale-pink printed version is pretty, but not executed well. She tossed it over what looks like an all-black getup for the "Wind River" premiere party during the Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 22 and we don't love how it drowned the actress.

Is "This Is Us" star Chris Sullivan messing with us? At the 2017 People's Choice Awards, Chris — who plays Toby on the popular NBC show — donned the strangest outfit on the carpet: strange rainbow-splattered pants, bright red Nikes, a blue suit jacket, a red bow tie and, well, check out these glasses…

Chris Sullivan opted for the most bizarre glasses we've ever seen — frames with mismatched lens shapes, one circular and one square. The unfortunate hat is just the cherry on top of this miss.

We've continued to be baffled by Sarah Jessica Parker's fashion choices, especially since we grew up idolizing her style. And her 2017 Golden Globes dress was just as confusing as ever, especially considering that it was a… wedding dress. Sarah Jessica's massive white frock actually came from Vera Wang's 2017 bridal collection, oddly placed, ill-fitting sleeves and all. And her hair? We'll get to that next!

Sarah Jessica Parker's hairstyle was nearly as confusing as her wedding dress choice at the 2017 Golden Globes. While many assumed it was a nod to the late Carrie Fisher, who rocked a similar look as Princess Leia, SJP explained to NBC that the hair selection was actually a tribute to her mother, who once wore her hair in a similar fashion.

Gold was truly Tracee Ellis Ross' color on Jan. 8! The star took home a Golden Globe statuette for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy TV Series for her work on "Black-ish" — and had a major style moment at the InStyle and Warner Bros. Golden Globes afterparty later that night in this stunning marigold Paule Ka number.

An example of a golden hue not working so well on the red carpet? Priyanka Chopra's Ralph Lauren gown, which was one of our least favorite looks at the Golden Globe Awards on Jan. 8.

Fab in floral! We're obsessed with the Naeem Khan dress Gabrielle Union wore to the "Being Mary Jane" premiere on Jan. 9. The multicolor beaded floral frock from the designer's Spring 2017 collection was absolutely adorable, and she paired it perfectly with super-simple strappy black heels.

We're really not used to saying this, but Diane Kruger served up a miss this month! The star attended the InStyle and Warner Bros. Golden Globes afterparty on Jan. 8 in this purple and black striped Nina Ricci number, which featured a high-neck, a center slit and way too many sequins.

Kaley Cuoco hasn't delivered a fashion hit in quite some time, but she made up for it at the InStyle and Warner Bros. Golden Globes afterparty on Jan. 8. We loved the star's sparkly silver Tommy Hilfiger gown, which featured cap sleeves and a plunging neckline.

Zoe Saldana had one of our favorite looks of the 2017 Golden Globes on Jan. 8 — this beautiful pale pink and red silk chiffon gown by Gucci that featured an asymmetrical tiered ruffled skirt. Our favorite part had to be the blush satin bow that held it all together.

Another Balmain miss. Cindy Crawford attended the Marie Claire Image Maker Awards on Jan. 10 in this mesh-paneled gown with oversized sleeves. Though we like the detailing on the bodice, we're not crazy about the sheer paneling up to the waist.

Flawless! We loved Issa Rae's 2017 Golden Globes look. The "Insecure" star looked like a fairy princess in this floor-length, long-sleeved, high-necked custom Christian Siriano gown.

We might be in the minority, but we adored Sienna Miller's Gucci dress at the "Live By Night" premiere on Jan. 9. The light blue and gold color combination was a pleasant surprise, and the lampshade style made for a beautiful red carpet moment.

That's a whole lot of sparkles! And purple! Lea Michele's Emanuel Ungaro gown was one of the gaudiest looks of the month. The star wore it to the InStyle and Warner Bros. Golden Globes afterparty on Jan. 8 — and landed herself firmly on the miss list.

Ruth Negga looked lovely in Valentino at the Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala on Jan. 2. The "Loving" star's delicate gown was covered in beautiful garden-themed embroidery and featured a plunging neckline and just a hint of sheerness. Ruth Negga's beauty game didn't detract from her beautiful Valentino gown as she opted to keep her accessories, hair and makeup minimal, finishing off the whole look with a rosy lip.

Apparently, there is such a thing as too much pink! And too many layers. Christy Turlington proved this at the Valentino dinner in New York City on Jan. 11. While we love all of these things in a dress separately — the high neck, the lace, the ruffles — thrown all together, they make this look a messy miss for the supermodel.

A hit! Kendall Jenner wore this zesty orange number at NBCUniversal's Golden Globes afterparty on Jan. 8. The strapless Paule Ka gown featured a slit, but it was Kendall's hair, makeup and accessories that really caught our eye! See them next…

When you think of a topknot, you don't necessarily think red carpet, but Kendall Jenner proved that the easy hairstyle is flexible. The star piled her dark hair into a high bun, kept her makeup warm and simple, and finished off the look with a stack of layered necklaces.

Yikes! Vivica A. Fox stepped out in this bright blue pantsuit — complete with floral-print embroidery — in New York City on Jan. 3, and despite pairing it with pale pink heels, she couldn't shake the major pajama vibes.

We adored Vanessa Hudgens' black beaded Naeem Khan dress. The star rocked this form-fitting, slinky style at the InStyle and Warner Bros. Golden Globes afterparty on Jan. 8, and though it looked conservative from the front, the back was a whole different story!

We love the color combination of Nina Dobrev's Zac Posen dress — mint and mocha — but we're not in love with the style. The star wore this knee-length dotted frock to the "xXx Return of Xander Cage" European premiere on Jan. 10, but it was the length that threw us off. How pretty would this have been if it was down to the floor?

Emma Stone's on-the-nose sartorial tribute to "La La Land" gets an A+ from us (and not just because the flick was one of our favorite movies of the year)! The star's nude Valentino gown, which featured delicate star detailing — a nod to the film's song "City of Stars" — solidified Emma as one of the best-dressed actresses at the 2017 Golden Globe Awards on Jan. 8.

Kylie Jenner in Balmain? Shocking! Okay, so that's really not surprising at all, but the slits on this dress? Though we're into the deep purple color, a crop top plus side slits seemed like overkill. We're so happy Leighton Meester is back on the red carpet that we almost don't care what she's wearing… almost! Lucky for us, the star's look didn't disappoint. Blair Waldorf would have been proud of her portrayer, as Leighton dazzled in a white Galvan wrap dress that she spiced up with some blue pumps at the InStyle and Warner Bros. Golden Globes afterparty on Jan. 8.

We loved Michelle Williams' Golden Globes look on Jan. 8, mainly because it managed to incorporate massive trends yet dressed them up just enough for the red carpet. The star's off-the-shoulder patterned gown by Louis Vuitton fit her perfectly and embraced the sweetheart neckline trend. But her accessories may have been our favorite part…

Michelle Williams proved chokers work on the red carpet too! The star added a thin velvet bow-tied ribbon around her neck as her only accessory and kept her platinum bob styled simply and her makeup minimal.

Where's your other sleeve, Lucy Hale? The "Pretty Little Liars" star donned this oddly unbalanced Cristian Siriano frock at the InStyle and Warner Bros. Golden Globes afterparty on Jan. 8.
