A bishop hat! Halos! Countless crosses! The 2018 Met Gala took place on May 7, 2018, and we were impressed by how many stars brought this year's theme, Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, to life! While some celebrities played it safe (cue the gold dresses), many took risks and reminded us why the Met Gala is the best fashion night of the year! So who has us giving thanks and who committed sartorial sins on the first Monday in May? Let's start with a famous face who definitely didn't disappoint — the archangel Katy Perry! The superstar can always be counted on to take a fashion risk and adhere to the theme, and this year, Katy took the Heavenly Bodies idea quite literally, making herself into an actual angel with the help of Versace. We're going to need to break this look down piece by piece, so keep reading to see more of Katy's ensemble plus the rest of the best and worst dressed at the Met Gala!

First up, let's take a look at the dress! Katy Perry sported this gold chainmail gown by Atelier Versace. The minidress featured an antique bronze netted overlay that was also studded with Swarovski crystals for an extra layer of glam. But you might not have noticed all the detailing in the dress, since it happened to be eclipsed by some massive wings…

Those wings though! The fashion house was also tasked with creating larger-than-life wings for Katy Perry — made of actual feathers! They were comprised of hand-brushed feathers that were then painted in a degradé gold for the ultimate, over-the-top accessory. Lastly, let's check out Katy's hair and makeup.

Even though all the attention happened to be on her insane couture, Katy Perry's hair and makeup were equally on-point. The star styled her short coif straight and spiky while opting for pink-hued makeup. The diamond cross earrings, though subtle and small, just added yet another perfectly on-theme element to Katy's angelic look.
When it comes to best dressed at the Met, you can always bet on Rihanna. Not only will the superstar show up and shut down the Met Gala carpet, she'll do so while executing the theme to perfection. Perfection! Rihanna executed this year's Met Gala theme flawlessly thanks to this headpiece reminiscent of a key wardrobe item used in the Catholic church. The papal mitre (designed by Stephen Jones) was covered in the same embellished fabric as the rest of Rihanna's Maison Margiela getup and elevated the look to make RiRi the best dressed, most perfectly on-theme star of the night!
The quickest way to end up on the miss list? Surprisingly, Shailene Woodley was not the only star channeling Joan of Arc on this carpet, but her attempt in Ralph Lauren proved to be more caricature than high fashion. Though the star's couture reportedly took over 50 hours to create and the metallic leather minidress looked reminiscent of the Catholic saint's iconic armor, when paired with over-the-knee boots and that bizarre hairstyle, this look landed among the misses. Successfully pulling off "Joan of Arc, but make it fashion"? Zendaya! The fashion darling did not disappoint on this year's Met Gala carpet, serving up this fierce Atelier Versace look. The gunmetal chain-mail dress evoked armor though it was embellished with Swarovski crystals and took an unexpected turn with its beaded, full skirt comprised of silk chiffon. Just as noteworthy? Zendaya's edgy hairstyle!
No, Zendaya wasn't debuting her new bob at the Met Gala. The stylish star was just taking things to the next level by emulating Joan of Arc even further! The Catholic icon famously rocked a short, blunt bob in order to blend in better while donning men's clothing, so not only was Zendaya schooling us in fashion, she was also educating us further on French history.
Our last Joan of Arc attempt comes from Michelle Williams, who opted for a more subtle take on the French fighter. Michelle donned this lackluster Louis Vuitton short-sleeved gown featuring leather cap sleeves and studded leather detailing, but it fell flat compared to the other two interpretations.
The most creative take on this year's theme? Gigi Hadid's Atelier Versace creation, which takes a cue from an iconic design element of the church — stained glass! Gigi's gown was comprised of micro-Swarovski crystal elements and tulle and designed in various shades to conjure up the feeling of beautiful church windows, so let's take a closer look!

We'd be remiss if we didn't mention Gigi Hadid's beautiful jewels! The supermodel accessorized with simple gold barrettes to hold her hair back and help show off those statement earrings. She finished off this gorgeous getup with a classic beauty look — a nude lip and rosy cheeks.
As one of the Met Gala co-chairs this year, we were expecting something major from Amal Clooney. Unfortunately, we were majorly disappointed. The attorney was one of the first to arrive on the carpet — donning this design by Richard Quinn that left us with so many questions. Sure, she made an understated nod to the theme with the lilies and roses on her ensemble — both are symbolic of the Virgin Mary and are often used in art to represent different spiritual truths in Catholicism — but why did that metallic, floral corset sit atop navy trousers? Why did she rock that messy ponytail? We don't have any answers, so let's just check out this look from the back…
We actually like Amal Clooney's look better from behind since you can't see the seemingly mismatched trousers from this angle. The floral-printed train was glamorous, but we were hoping that as a co-chair, Amal would wow us with something more boldly related to this year's theme. Beautiful in Balmain! Jennifer Lopez stayed on-theme in this studded number by the fashion house featuring a high neck, a huge red-and-blue cross across the chest and black-and-gold netting. Despite rocking a cross, Jennifer still opted to show plenty of skin — as the gown featured cut-outs and a thigh-high slit. Next up? A better look at that train!
The Met steps were made for major train moments, so Jennifer Lopez's Balmain tail flourished on the cream-colored carpet. The train featured row after row of black feathers, making for an ultra-glamorous moment.
We were waiting for someone to channel nun couture! Eiza Gonzalez answered our prayers… but maybe we should take them back! Though the actress certainly followed this year's theme, her Prabal Gurung number left a lot to be desired. The fitted, low-cut black gown was topped off with a white habit-like cape making for a confusing, scandalous Halloween costume-like take on the nun look.
Always managing to make Serena van der Woodsen proud, Blake Lively stunned on the Met Gala carpet once again, this time in an Atelier Versace design that took over 600 hours to create. The dark-red silk and velvet confection featured a bustier entirely encrusted in jewels, making it reminiscent of a communion chalice or stained glass, while the structured skirt gave way to an oversized, ultra-glam train, which we need to see in action…

A dress that regal required some pretty royal jewels, so Blake Lively turned to the one and only Lorraine Schwartz. Outfitted in over $2 million worth of gems, Blake added some intense bling including this custom-made halo that held over 100 carats of champagne diamonds. The other jaw-dropping piece? Those earrings — which just happen to be comprised of 30-carat emeralds and diamonds.
A little black dress? Miley Cyrus, is that you? The star, who used to never shy away from taking a fashion risk, played things too safe in Stella McCartney. Though her looks don't always land, no one can deny the fact that Sarah Jessica Parker commits to a theme. Blue velvet and shoulder pads? Emma Stone wasn't even pretending to stay on-theme at the Met Gala this year. Her Louis Vuitton gown was studded with plenty of gold hardware — perhaps the only vague attempt at channeling the Heavenly Bodies theme — but seemed to be more nautical than celestial, making it a miss in our book.
Too pretty in Prada! Amanda Seyfried's Prada dress was a heavenly hue that also happened to pay homage to the Vatican itself, embodying the yellow of the Vatican City flag. We loved the gown's interesting sleeve dynamic — one short, one voluminous and long — and how it set it apart from plenty of other gold-tinted gowns on the carpet. We loved Amanda Seyfried's voluminous waves, rosy-hued makeup and the delicate little tiara hidden amongst her hair. The detailing nearly matched the exquisite floral design along the bodice of her dress, making her yet another star who paid perfect attention to detail on the big night.

That distinction goes to Chadwick Boseman, who not only stunned on the Met Gala carpet but also adhered perfectly to the Heavenly Bodies theme, looking like an actual altar come to life in custom Versace. The actor donned this white embellished tuxedo by the fashion house that featured antique gold beading and a coordinating cape with bejeweled crosses. Chadwick Boseman's Versace creation channeled the opulence of Catholicism to a tee with embellished crosses against his crisp white priest-like cape. That combined with Versace's traditional Medusa-studded detailing on the tuxedo's buttons married fashion and the Catholic church perfectly.
White, black and silver? Alicia Vikander's Louis Vuitton look left a lot to be desired as the typically stylish star donned this column dress that didn't match the theme or push any fashion boundaries. We saw the capelet detail on plenty of other looks on fashion's biggest night, and the addition of the opera-length leather gloves looked like a last-minute attempt to make things edgy that failed.
Like a few other Met Gala looks, upon first glance, Kim Kardashian West's getup didn't appear to adhere to the theme. The star sparkled in a gold Atelier Versace creation, which might have been lost amongst dozens of other gold looks if not for the impressive details. The spaghetti-strap chainmail gown featured beaded Byzantine crosses down the front, giving a subtle nod to Catholicism. Get a better view next!

Madonna's name is Madonna, so we expected her to really dominate at this year's Met Gala. And while the star sort of stayed on-theme, her gothic Jean Paul Gaultier look was more puzzling than perfection. Madonna's accessories were inspired by the Catholic theme as she rocked a black veil over her face, a lot of layered necklaces bearing crosses and a crown made entirely of crosses on top of her head. On anyone else, we might be impressed, but since this is Madonna we were really expecting more.
One of the worst looks of the night? That belongs to Mindy Kaling, who inexplicably paired this silver dress by Vassilis Zoulias with navy over-the-elbow gloves and a crown adorned with massive bright-blue gemstones that looked like part of a kid's halloween costume. No, seriously, you've got to see this crown up close!

Celestial royalty! Hailee Steinfeld sported this stunning crown made up of pearls, which matched perfectly with her layers of pearl necklaces. Aside from darling accessories, Hailee also pulled off a flawless beauty look complete with warm tones and a dark-red lip. We're giving this look an A+ for angel!
Frances McDormand is one of our favorites, but we can't get behind this bizarre Valentino getup. The actress really played it up on the Met Gala carpet, rocking a ruffled teal design with what seems to be a pale green dress underneath. But even though we have to label this look a miss, we do appreciate that she committed to that intense butterfly headpiece.
The true golden couple! Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen made an adorable arrival in joint Versace ensembles. The golden baroque-print detailing on the lapels of his black suit coordinated perfectly with his wife's shimmering gold gown. And while Tom certainly looked dapper, we're going to need a better look at Gisele in that dress!
Gisele Bundchen arrived in what was not only a stunning design by Versace in a cherubic golden shade but an eco-friendly one. The supermodel's dress, comprised of organic silk and cotton, featured a thigh-high slit and an asymmetrical neckline with a high-neck detail and one long sleeve. Red is a powerful color in the church, evoking the passion of Christ, so quite a few stars turned up in the vibrant shade. Our only complaint with this look? Her makeup was perhaps too dramatic, detracting from the extravagant headpiece.
Twins! Anne Hathaway also opted for a red dress and a gold headpiece, but the star's color selection says more about the designer she chose than religion. The actress opted to rock a Valentino dress in the design house's signature shade, making for a major fashion moment regardless of the night's theme. The gown's high halter neckline brought as much drama as that spiked headpiece, which we'll see next…

Cindy Crawford also opted for religious red, but aside from reminding us of Catholicism, her Versace dress also transported us back to the 1991 Academy Awards — back when she wore that iconic red gown by the same designer. This updated version was made of red matte chainmail and certainly popped on the Met Gala carpet.
Sorry, Shaun White, but this is the Met Gala. The Olympian seemed to have stumbled upon this red carpet in the middle of New York by the looks of his super-casual getup. The green velvet jacket by Etro, the T-shirt and the socks without shoes really cemented this look as one big flop in the midst of fashion's biggest night.
Kendall Jenner kept things edgy in a stark white Off White design. We loved the funky take on the red carpet jumpsuit with its off-the-shoulder, ruffled neckline, and long, sheer sleeves that ended in gloves. Equally cool? The cut of the pants! Get a better view next…

Kendall Jenner's Off White ensemble was a breath of fresh air, showing us something we haven't seen before with dramatic tails on the pants portion of her jumpsuit. Sienna Miller used to push boundaries in the fashion world, so we're puzzled to see her in this lackluster getup at the Met Gala. The star's Louis Vuitton look was a snore with its long-sleeved white top and gold sequined skirt. The casual outfit made the attempt at channeling the theme via a star-emblazoned headpiece seem out of place.
Yes, Queen Daenerys Targaryen! Emilia Clarke arrived looking both gorgeous and on-point with the night's theme. Instead of transforming herself into an angel, she opted to wear a gown with actual angels on it! And we were equally in love with her unique hair and makeup, so take a look at those next!
Emilia Clarke reminded everyone that she plays royalty on TV when she opted for a floral headband reminiscent of a crown. She pushed the envelope with her makeup, rocking a neon-pink shade heavy on her cheeks, and we think the unexpected look was perfectly edgy and appropriate for the high-fashion night!
At least it's edgy? Cara Delevingne kept things covered up by going with a black fishnet gown complete with a crystal-studded veil in this daring Dior look. And while we give her props for going high-fashion, we're disappointed she didn't try to abide by the night's theme.

Priyanka Chopra gave us one of our favorite accessories of the night, and it certainly was no easy feat to create! The Ralph Lauren headpiece was made up of red Swarovski crystals and gold beading and took artisans over 250 hours to make!
While this looks like a dress fit for a gala, it's certainly not fit for the Met Gala! Brooke Shields bored in a big navy blue ball gown — complete with pockets — and slicked-back hair.
Serving up etheral pink vibes, SZA seemed to descend onto the Met Gala carpet straight from heaven in this frothy Versace number. In a sea of gold dresses, you've got to try to stand out! Ashley Graham jumped on the gold gown bandwagon with this strapless number by Prabal Gurung complete with a thigh-high slit and a cape-turned-train, but it just wasn't enough to set her look apart. The supermodel bored us with such an uninspired ensemble on fashion's big night.
Another model in another dull gold dress? Emily Ratajkowski continued the tired trend in this Marc Jacobs number. This one also had a thigh-high slit and cape but featured long sleeves and a low-cut back. Next!
Another gold dress? Groundbreaking. Olivia Munn showed up to the Met Gala in this golden gown by the H&M Conscious Collection. And while the slinky gold creation may have been a hit on another red carpet, it takes more to make waves at the Met Gala! At least her makeup and accessories attempted to channel this year's theme…

Year after year, Kate Bosworth can always be counted upon for really bringing the drama and adhering to the Met Gala theme! This time she channeled saints and angels to go with the Heavenly Bodies theme in a flawless statement-making pale-gold ball gown by Oscar de la Renta. Let's take a closer look!

Though we hear Selena Gomez had her favorite Bible verse embroidered somewhere on her Coach gown, that's the only element of this dress that seems to adhere to the theme — and we can't even see it! This simple, tiered spaghetti-strap gown wouldn't make a mark on a normal red carpet, much less the Met Gala's. This wispy confection fell flat, placing Selena among the misses.
We love when the men take fashion risks — and Darren Criss did just that at the Met Gala! The actor rocked a sparkling blazer complete with religious imagery plus burgundy dress pants and a matching bow tie, making this ensemble full of color and ready for the night's theme!
It's hard to believe this is Ariana Grande's first Met Gala since she's been around for quite a while. The pop star opted for a custom Vera Wang for her first Met Gala carpet, and its origins were perfectly on-trend with the year's theme. The design featured an all-over print featuring Michelangelo's work from the Sistine Chapel that paired well with the ball gown style. The sleeveless, low-cut gown showed off an embroidered landscape scene which portrayed a lake, complete with birds, reeds and a pretty blue sky… we're just not quite sure why.
Heavenly bodies evokes the idea of a moody blue-gray sky… which means Daniel Kaluuya's gorgeous Prada suit shade is perfectly on-trend! We loved the way he kept things simple with a matching bow tie.
