The
Donald Trump White House embraced internet meme culture by posting a controversial AI-generated image on May 4th — known globally as Star Wars Day. The image showed a muscular Trump, flanked by bald eagles and U.S. flags, wielding a red lightsaber.
The administration's X account wrote in the caption, "Happy May the 4th to all, including the Radical Left Lunatics who are fighting so hard to bring Sith Lords, Murderers, Drug Lords, Dangerous Prisoners, and well-known MS-13 Gang Members, back into our Galaxy. You're not the Rebellion — you're the Empire. May the 4th be with you."
The red lightsaber, typically used by villains like Darth Vader, quickly drew backlash from Star Wars fans who saw it as unintentionally casting Trump as a Sith.
It was the second AI-generated image of Trump to cause public outrage in just three days.
On May 2, the official White House account reposted another digitally-altered image — this time showing Trump dressed as the pope. The post originated from Trump's Truth Social account, shortly after he told reporters he'd "like to be pope" in the wake of
Pope Francis'
death. Though Trump, a non-Catholic, did attend Francis' funeral, many saw the image as distasteful and ill-timed. Bill O'Reilly called the image "
dopey," while
Karl Rove took a harsher stance, calling it "
deeply offensive."
