Kelly's Criticism of Trump's Crypto Venture
Senator Mark Kelly's original post, which sparked Roger Stone's response, read: "Trump is cashing in on his presidency and making millions from his own crypto coins. It's corruption in broad daylight."Kelly's statement highlighted concerns about Donald Trump profiting from his time in office, particularly through a meme coin venture that he claimed was financially successful after the 2020 election.
Kelly also mentioned his efforts to co-sponsor legislation that would ban federal officials, including the president, vice president and members of Congress, from issuing or promoting cryptocurrency assets for personal gain.
Gabrielle Giffords Responds to Stone's Threats
Gabrielle Giffords, the wife of Sen. Mark Kelly and a former congresswoman who survived an assassination attempt in 2011, responded to Roger Stone's incendiary comments. On her X page, Giffords wrote, "Elon Musk called my husband @CaptMarkKelly a traitor. Yesterday, Roger Stone said he should be executed for treason."
She continued, "After last year, [Donald] Trump and his allies should understand that the threat of political violence is real. It stole a job that I loved. Inciting violence is unAmerican — it's what extremists do. Anyone serious about protecting this country should know the difference."
Stone Responds to Giffords' Criticism
Roger Stone defended his initial comments on Friday, May 9, replying to Gabrielle Giffords' statement. He wrote, "What I actually said, of course, was that your husband being partners with a communist Chinese company that makes surveillance balloons that are used to spy on America, which I believe is treasonous. I said he should be TRIED and if convicted, of course the penalty for treason is capital punishment. But of course you left that part out. Typical left-wing distortion."
Stone's response focused on Kelly's alleged business dealings with a Chinese company involved in surveillance, framing it as an act of treason.
Social Media Reactions
The public reaction on social media to Roger Stone's remarks was intense. Many users condemned Stone's call for violence, with one user tweeting, "Roger Stone should never have said that. Inciting violence isn't free speech, it's a threat to democracy."
Another responded, "This kind of rhetoric is dangerous. Everyone needs to denounce it, including [Donald] Trump."
Others defended Stone, arguing that his comments were based on concerns about national security. These reactions reflect the polarized nature of American politics, with Stone's statement drawing both fierce criticism and support, depending on political alignment.
