Musk Exposed
DOGE leader Elon Musk is out to sabotage social security, in the words of one Social Security Administration (SSA) agent. When Rennie Glasgow left a better-paying sales position to work for the Social Security Administration (SSA) 15 years ago, he didn't do it for financial gain, The Daily Beast reported.
"To ensure that we provide quality customer service to those who have paid into the program and expect to enjoy that benefit as they get older or disabled or lose a loved one," he said of his new collective mission.
Despite underfunding, Glasgow observed, "Things were going very, very well. Our agency is the one agency that uses only 1 percent of its budget for employees, benefits, and payroll."
But now with Musk's interference, everything is reportedly at risk. Keep reading to discover how his influence threatens the very foundation of the program that so many depend on.

DOGE Disrupts a Well-Oiled Machine
SSA's balance began to unravel after Elon Musk, appointed by President Donald Trump to lead the newly created Department of Government Efficiency, began to target the agency.Musk was not sworn in under the standard constitutional oath, unlike traditional federal employees. Rennie Glasgow questioned why an agency that was already running lean and effectively would be singled out. "We were getting the job done efficiently and effectively, until now," he said.
DOGE's first step was to gain access to the SSA's confidential databases. Glasgow explained how seriously SSA staff are trained to safeguard that data: "We are trained from day one [that] information that you have access to is not your information, it's government information… I cannot look up my own information… I have to report that within an hour, even if it's a mistake."
But under DOGE's watch, Glasgow pointed out, "Folks that have not been trained, have not been sworn to protect that information… just go around accessing and doing whatever they want."
Staffing Cuts and System Failures Hit the Frontlines
The Syracuse SSA office, where Rennie Glasgow works, has already lost seven employees under Donald Trump's workforce reduction directive, bringing the team down to just 31."They were told that they're no longer needed," Glasgow said. Simultaneously, misleading public communications have driven confusion.
"Our seniors are traveling to come in here to be told, 'Oh, you don't need to bring in an ID,'" he shared.
Meanwhile, technological issues are making matters worse. "Every day, between the hours of 10 to about 12, our system goes down. Individuals are in tears because they are feeling like they're getting so much work coming on them now," he said.
Pressure Mounts, Morale Slips
With added workloads and unclear directives, SSA workers are struggling to maintain morale while helping vulnerable populations. "You sometimes have to tell people who are either needy or disabled or both that the law only permits them to receive a certain amount," Rennie Glasgow said. But he and others try to go beyond the rules, stating: "We're going to try to get this done… We can refer you to these social services or something."
Still, "Emails are coming in every day changing some rule to make it more difficult for individuals that are collecting Social Security benefits," he added.
Despite the pressure, SSA staff are working to maintain a calm front. "We cannot afford to get upset. We cannot afford to lose our cool… We have to, at all times, lean on each other, lean on our patience lean on our understanding," Glasgow said.
But even off the clock, the stress lingers. "When you go home now, it's the stress, it's the uncertainty, it's… what's the next executive order?" he added.
Glasgow's Warning
As a senior claims expert, Rennie Glasgow handles complex cases, but he now questions the long-term survival of the SSA. "What's happening now, I am not sure that my kids will be able to get Social Security when the time comes," he said. "I'm not even sure if I'll be able to get Social Security when the time comes."He believes there is a deliberate effort to weaken the agency's public trust. "We're being pushed to ensure that we cannot perform effectively and efficiently, so that they can privatize," Glasgow warned.
He also took aim at Elon Musk's criticism of Social Security: "Let them get their hands on the $3 trillion and you'll see what's a Ponzi scheme," he declared.
But Glasgow closed with a vow to resist, stating: "We are going to continue to fight. We're going to continue to stand up. We're going to continue to ask our Congress to stand up and to implement whatever measures they can to ensure that this agency is not privatized."
