"Twilight" director Catherine Hardwick admits there might have been too much chemistry between Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in the 2008 film…. so much so that it was "illegal."
While on The Big Hit Show podcast, Catherine recalled the two young actors' steamy audition. At the time, Robert was 21, and Kristen was 17.
"I could tell they had a lot of chemistry, and I'm like, 'Oh my God.' I thought, Kristen was 17. I don't want to get in some illegal things," she said, noting the legal age of consent in California is 18 years old.
During the audition, which took place in California, the passion was so intense that the British actor fell off the bed while he and Kristen kissed.
"So I remember I told Rob, 'By the way, Kristen is 17. In our country, it's illegal to have a sexual…' And he's like, 'Oh, OK, whatever,'" she said.
Robert and Kristen ended up falling in love and were in a relationship for four years. Catherine, of course, saw the romance in its infancy, as the duo's audition took place at her house.
"Rob and Kristen did the audition right here on the bed. They did the kissing scene and he fell off and landed right there on this floor," she said on the podcast.
"He walked in and he had his hair was dyed black for some play, with these wacky bangs. He was a bit out of shape," she said of RPatz. "His shirt was just all messy, and I'm like, 'Oh, OK. OK, let's see how this goes.'"
Based on the box office returns, it clearly went well.
"Rob and Kristen auditioned on my bed, the kissing scene, Rob was so into it he fell off the bed. I'm like, 'Dude, calm down.' And I'm in there filming with my little video camera, whatever," Catherine said. "And at the end [of the audition] Kristen was like, 'It has to be Rob.'"
