"Trading Places" star Ty Pennington suffered a terrifying health scare that resulted in him being intubated in the intensive care unit.
The hospitalization occurred not long after the TV host attended the red carpet premiere of "Barbie" in Los Angeles.
On Instagram, Ty said he went "from the red carpet to the ICU," which is why his social media has been quiet, something of an anomaly for the normally-active designer.
"This last week has been interesting! I'm okay now, still recovering," he told his 250,000 followers.
"Sunday I hit the red carpet for @barbiethemovie , monday I flew to Colorado to start filming in Breckinridge and Tuesday morning I woke up at 4am and could barely breathe," he wrote. "Turns out, that sore throat Ive had for the last month was actually an abscess which had grown so large it was closing off my airway. Next thing I know, I was intubated and flown to the ICU in Denver."
Ty had surgery in the middle of this past week and was released from the ICU on Thursday, July 13.
In his post, the author highlighted the highs and the lows of the week, which showed him on the "Barbie" red carpet in one image. Other images showed him intubated and in a hospital bed. Quite the dichotomy!
His situation is a "great reminder to LISTEN to your body when it's telling you something," he wrote, adding that he's been on "heavy sedatives."
The former "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" host thanked the hospital staffs at St. Anthony's in Lakewood, Colorado, and Summit Health in Frisco, Texas.
Fans flooded his social media with well wishes, and several other spoke of having similar experiences.
"So glad you're ok! My boss had this and it took a terrible turn. Sore throat turned into abscess. Then turned into sepsis. She was in the hospital for 5-6 months," one person said. Another added, "So grateful you caught it in time. Our brother passed away 6/6/23 from this very thing. Speedy recovery!"
Ty posted both comments on his Instagram Story. He wrote, "Why this can be so dangerous."
Ty's "Battle on the Beach" costar Taniya Nayak expressed her support, as well. "We love you. So happy you are ok! Missed you in Breck but we are so happy you got the care you needed just in time," she penned in his comments section. "We all were (and still are) thinking of you and sending the most positive vibes! Speedy recovery brother."
