Words hurt. Selena Gomez has often said that she's unaffected by social media bodyshaming comments. Now, though, she admits that's not truthful.
"I lied. I would go online and I would post a picture of myself and say [the negative comments] don't matter, I'm not accepting what you're saying — all the while being in the room posting that, crying my eyes out, because nobody deserves to hear those things," she said on Apple TV+'s "Dear."
The "Only Murders in the Building" star thought that her fibbing would be beneficial to others.
"I was posting these things saying it doesn't bother me because I didn't want it to bother other people who are experiencing the same thing — getting shamed for what they look like, who they are, who they love," she said. "I just think it's so unfair. I don't think that anybody deserves to feel less than."
Selena, 30, is no stranger to being bodyshamed. In January, online trolls criticized her body after she was photographed in a swimsuit in Mexico. Shortly after, Selena said "I'm not a model, never will be."
The pop star has been open about body image, particularly given that she was diagnosed with lupus in 2014. The medication she takes for control the condition can cause the body to fluctuate weight.
"I tend to hold a lot of water weight and that happens very normally. And then when I'm off of [my medication], I tend to lose weight," she explained during a February TikTok Live video. "I just wanted to say and encourage anyone out there who feels any sort of shame for exactly what they're going for and nobody knows the real story — I just want people to know that you're beautiful and you're wonderful and, yeah, maybe we have days where we feel like s*** but I would much rather be healthy and take care of myself."
