Lena Dunham created the show and starred as its protagonist, Hannah Horvath — a self-centered and immature aspiring writer who struggles to support herself financially after her parents cut her off.
_
After wrapping up her work on "Girls," Lena Dunham — who became the first woman to win a Directors Guild of America award for outstanding directing for a comedy series for her work on the show — appeared on an episode of "American Horror Story: Cult" and in the Oscar-winning film "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood." She co-wrote and served as a showrunner on HBO's Jennifer Garner-led series "Camping" and executive produced the short-lived HBO drama-comedy series "Generation." In 2022, she wrote, directed and produced the comedy "Sharp Stick," which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival. Lena, who was in a relationship with musician-producer Jack Antonoff from 2012 to 2017, married English Peruvian musician Luis Felber in 2021 after less than a year of dating. In 2017, she underwent an elective hysterectomy due to years of chronic pain from endometriosis, and in 2018, she got sober.

Allison Williams starred as Marnie Michaels, Hannah's equally self-centered best friend from college (and, when the show begins) roommate. She starts off as an art gallery assistant but goes on to pursue her real passion: a career in music.
_
Two months before "Girls" went off the air, Allison Williams appeared in Jordan Peele's critically acclaimed directorial debut, "Get Out." She went on to land a recurring role on "A Series of Unfortunate Events" from 2018 to 2019 and starred in the indie thriller "Horizon Line" in 2020. After nearly four years of marriage, Allison and CollegeHumor co-founder Ricky Van Veen, split in 2019.

Jemima Kirke portrayed Jessa Johansson, one of Hannah's close friends. The Britain-born beauty is known for being unpredictable, flighty and for favoring a laissez faire lifestyle. In the beginning of the series, she returns to New York City and becomes roommates with her cousin, Shoshanna.
_
Jemima Kirke has enjoyed continued success in Hollywood since the end of "Girls." The London native appeared on the 2018 Netflix psychological drama-comedy series "Maniac" and in the 2020 romantic drama film "Sylvie's Love." In 2021, she joined the cast of the critically acclaimed British drama-comedy series "Sex Education" for its third season and will next star on the BBC Three and Hulu series "Conversations with Friends," which is based on the 2017 Sally Rooney novel of the same name. As for Jemima's personal life? The Rhode Island School of Design alum split from first husband Michael Mosberg, a former lawyer with whom she shares two children, in 2016 and married Australian singer-songwriter Alex Cameron in 2019.

Zosia Mamet took on the role of Shoshanna Shapiro, Jessa's innocent and unassuming younger cousin. When we first meet her, she's a student at New York University with a major love for "Sex and the City."
_
Zosia Mamet's impressive acting career has continued since her days as Shoshanna Shapiro on "Girls." In addition to guest starring on notable shows like "Stumptown" and "Dickinson," Zosia — who's been married to actor Evan Jonigkeit since 2016 — appeared in the 2018 Andrew Garfield-led dark comedy film "Under the Silver Lake." In 2020, she began starring on the HBO Max thriller series "The Flight Attendant."
_
Adam Driver took on the role of Adam Sackler, a narcissistic and emotionally unavailable aspiring actor, who, at the start of the series, is in a casual relationship with Hannah.
_
Of all the "Girls" cast members, Adam Driver is undoubtedly the most successful. In the years since the former Marine found fame on cable, he's established himself as a bona fide movie star: Adam's appeared in an array of both critically acclaimed and blockbuster films including "The Meyerowitz Stories," the final three "Star Wars" movies, "The Last Duel" and "House of Gucci." He earned Oscar nods in 2019 and 2020 for his work in "BlacKkKlansman" and "Marriage Story." Adam, who founded the nonprofit Arts in the Armed Forces, has been married to actress Joanne Tucker, with whom he shares a son, since 2013.

Andrew Rannells played Elijah Krantz, Hannah's eccentric ex-turned-close friend from college who comes out as gay.
_
Tony-nominated "The Book of Mormon" and "Falsettos" actor Andrew Rannells — who briefly played King George III in "Hamilton" in 2015 — returned to the Broadway stage in 2018 for "The Boys in the Band." He's since appeared in the films "A Simple Favor," "The Prom" and "The Stand In." He began starring on Showtime's historical dark-comedy series "Black Monday" in 2019 and appeared on Peacock's musical-comedy series "Girls5eva" in 2021. The Nebraska native has been in a relationship with "Desperate Housewives" actor Tuc Watkins since 2019.
_
Alex Karpovsky portrayed Ray Ploshansky, a coffee shop manager who starts off as Marnie's ex-boyfriend's friend but soon becomes close with the rest of the group.
_
Alex Karpovsky has kept a relatively low profile since the conclusion of "Girls." He's appeared in a handful of films including "The Vanishing of Sidney Hall," "The Front Runner" and the Peter Sarsgaard- and Rashida Jones-led film "The Sound of Silence" in 2019. From 2018 to 2020, he appeared on Amazon Prime's psychological-thriller series "Homecoming."
_
Ebon Moss-Bachrach played Desi Harperin, Marnie's bandmate and eventual illicit lover. Desi engages in a secret, sexual relationship with Marnie despite having a girlfriend.
_
Shortly after the conclusion of "Girls," Ebon Moss-Bachrach played a character dissimilar to his messy HBO series alter ego when he was cast on the Marvel superhero show "The Punisher." While he's popped up in films including "Tesla" and "Sharp Stick," which was written, directed and produced by Lena Dunham, Ebon has found most of his recent success on the small screen. In addition to landing a starring role on the short-lived AMC horror series "NOS4A2," Ebon appeared on "Interrogation" and an episode of 2022's "The Dropout" starring Amanda Seyfried. He's been married to Ukrainian photographer, painter and director Yelena Yemchuk, who's the mother of his two children, since 2010.
