Amid a flurry of changes in her life, Kat Von D is now looking a little different. The former "LA Ink" star no longer has an affinity for her many, many tattoos, so she's been traveling to Philadelphia to cover them up with black ink. "17 sessions, and almost 40 accumulative hours later, we are about 80% done with blacking out my body," she wrote on Instagram alongside a video of her coverups.
"What you consider ugly, might be beautiful to someone else," she added of her body, which has basically become a canvas of black ink.

Kat Von D went on to detail why she wanted to black out tattoos on her arms, body, neck and hands. Initially, the reality TV alum tried laser removal, but she ultimately decided she "wasn't a good candidate considering how much coverage I wanted to remove." Plus, she found the process to be slow and extremely painful.
Black ink is more her style.
"I love the simplicity of the black — but definitely have seen some beautiful ones where people tattoo white over their black out," she penned.

The big question surrounding Kat Von D's decision to cover up her dozens of tattoos is why. The answer, though, is simple…
"I had many tattoos that represented a part of my life that no longer aligns with who I am today," she said. "Some people are fine with keeping these types of landmarks in time on them — I personally grew tired of waking up to them, and seeing those constant reminders every time I looked in a mirror. Also, I really love the esthetic. I know it's not for everyone but it is very satisfying to me to see a clean slate when I look down on to my arms."

While addressing critics who believe blacking out your body can't be a good health decision, Kat Von D argued, "I've been getting tattooed for almost three decades and have never felt a negative effect."
"Personally, I believe there's more toxicity in most of the foods we eat, makeup we wear and chemicals in cleaning supplies. Are you eating 100% organic, eliminating all seed oils from your diet, cutting out all processed foods, sugars and food dyes? Wearing perfumes or makeup without hormone disrupters, lighting candles without fragrance, cleaning without harsh chemicals?" she asked. "We can always try our best to pick our poisons. Personally I try my best to do all those things above, but I do love me some lipstick, candy and a tattoo every now and then! And I'm ok with that."

The ink cover-up comes amid a lifestyle change for Kat Von D. In 2020, the makeup guru moved from Los Angeles to Indiana. Earlier this month, she also revealed that she'd gotten baptized after embracing Christianity — the response from fellow Christians, however, left a lot to be desired.
