Cher is seeking a conservatorship for son Elijah Blue Allman, it emerged at the end of 2023.
The Oscar and Grammy winner is asking a judge to appoint her as the sole conservator of her son's estate, alleging that the 47-year-old musician — whose father is the late rock star Gregg Allman — is "substantially unable to manage his financial resources," People magazine reported on Dec. 28.
According to Cher's filing, a conservator is "urgently needed … to protect Elijah's property from loss or injury" — he's due to receive assets from his trust before the end of 2023 — because he is "currently unable to manage his assets due to severe mental health and substance abuse issues." The filing also states that "Elijah is entitled to regular distributions from the Trust, but given his ongoing mental health and substance abuse issues, [Cher] is concerned that any funds distributed to Elijah will be immediately spent on drugs, leaving Elijah with no assets to provide for himself and putting Elijah's life at risk."
Cher says in court papers that she's "worked tirelessly to get Elijah into treatment and get him the help he needs." She further says she "loves Elijah immensely and has always acted with his best interests in mind." The star explains that she's been "unable to discuss his preferences concerning the appointment of a temporary conservator" because of his "current mental and physical health issues."
The filing also alleges that Elijah's estranged wife, Marieangela King, is not fit to be his conservator because "their tumultuous relationship has been marked by a cycle of drug addiction and mental health crises."
The conservatorship request comes after legal documents filed by Marieangela made headlines in September 2023. She's claimed that Cher had Elijah kidnapped from a hotel room in 2022 by four hired men while he was attempting to reconcile with Marieangela.

Music icon Cher, a mother of two, was behind the kidnapping of son Elijah Blue Allman from a hotel room while he was attempting to reconcile with his estranged wife on their wedding anniversary, the Oscar winner's daughter-in-law claimed in court documents obtained by DailyMail.com in September 2023.
The incident took place in November 2022, Cher's estranged daughter-in-law, KING musician Marieangela King — who goes by the stage name Queeny — wrote in a declaration filed with a Los Angeles court amid her ongoing divorce from Elijah, whose father is late rock star Gregg Allman.
In the legal docs, Marieangela said she and Elijah spent 12 days "alone together … working on our marriage." Added the singer, "Given the proper time, I believe that we will reconcile."
But that attempt was cut short when four men arrived to take Elijah — who's struggled with addiction — to force him to seek treatment.
DailyMail.com further reported on Sept. 27 that Cher's youngest son had since returned to rehab after passing out outside a Los Angeles hotel earlier in the month.

Marieangela King, 36 — a musician in the band KING who goes by the name Queeny — married Elijah Blue Allman, 47, in 2013. He filed for divorce in 2021. They were attempting to reconcile in late 2022 when his mother, Cher, 77, stepped in, Marieangela has claimed.
A December 2022 court filing made by Marieangela reads, "On November 30, 2022, the night of our wedding anniversary, four people came to our hotel room and removed [Elijah] from our room. … I was told by one of the four men who took him that they were hired by [Elijah's] mother."
In the legal declaration — which Marieangela's attorney filed four days after Elijah was allegedly kidnapped — Queeny wrote, "I am currently unaware of my husband's wellbeing or whereabouts. I am very concerned and worried about him."
She added that her estranged spouse was "currently in lockdown at a treatment facility that is undisclosed to me" and that she'd been told Elijah had "no access to his phone."
She added, "I understand his family's efforts to make sure he is well, and I want what is best for my husband."

Cher denied her daughter-in-law's version of events concerning hiring four men to abduct Elijah Blue Allman, telling People magazine in October 2023, "that rumor is not true," without elaborating.
However, she confirmed what People called a "private family matter" was related to her son's addiction issues.
"I'm not suffering from any problem that millions of people in the United States aren't," Cher of Elijah's substance abuse battle. "I'm a mother. This is my job — one way or another, to try to help my children. You do anything for your children. Whenever you can help them, you just do it because that's what being a mother is. But it's joy, even with heartache — mostly, when you think of your children, you just smile and you love them, and you try to be there for them."

According to DailyMail.com, Elijah Blue Allman continued to face addiction issues since the November 2022 incident detailed by his estranged wife, Marieangela King (pictured here with Elijah in 2013).
On Sept. 26, 2023, the outlet published photos of Cher's youngest child, whose father is late Allman Brothers Band rocker Gregg Allman, looking disheveled at Los Angeles's famed Chateau Marmont hotel, where he was believed to have been living for the previous six months.
DailyMail.com reported that at the time it published its story, Elijah was in a rehab facility in Pasadena, California, following his collapse on the sidewalk outside the Chateau's entrance.
"At first he looked like he was dead, but he had in fact passed out," a witness told the outlet, adding, "The staff picked him up and took him inside."

Insiders told DailyMail.com in September 2023 that worried hotel staff at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles, where Elijah Blue Allman had been living for months, regularly reached out to his mother, Cher, "due to his apparent drugged-out appearance," the outlet wrote in a Sept. 26 report.
"Virtually every morning and afternoon Elijah could be seen in front of the hotel on the sidewalk either leaning against the wall or sitting on the sidewalk smoking. He would come out with a full cigarette and by the time he had finished it, he would be passed out," an insider told DailyMail.com, adding, "It always looked like it was dipped in something. He looked strung-out and messy, like he was a homeless person living on the streets."
According to DailyMail.com, in early September 2023, Cher hired a caretaker who "would sit out in the entrance area of the hotel just waiting to see where and what Elijah was up to," the insider said.
According to DailyMail.com, Cher had planned an intervention for Elijah for Sept. 14 but before it could happen, hotel staff found him passed out outside the Chateau's entrance. Two days later, the outlet reported, police escorted Elijah out of the hotel and he began another rehab stay.

In 2014, Elijah Blue Allman — the son of Cher and former husband Gregg Allman — spoke to "Entertainment Tonight" about his decades-long battle with drug addiction.
"I started with drugs around the same time that we all did, around 11. I mean it's just what you did, it's just what everybody did," the former Deadsy rocker shared, revealing he started with marijuana and ecstasy before moving on to harder substances.
"I [was] just looking to escape all the things in my past and, that's when you turn to those kind of drugs, you know heroin and opiates," Elijah explained. "[Heroin] kind of saved me … If I didn't have that at that point, I don't know what I would have done. … You may jump off a bridge. If you can only just go through that time period and live through it and then get help."
