'I Know What You Did Last Summer' actors and actresses: Where are they now?

Who would have thought this low-budget film would have become a classic? Twenty years ago on Oct. 17, 1997, "I Know What You Did Last Summer" hit movie theaters. Soon, every tween and teen in sight was rushing to see the slasher film that starred some of the biggest young heartthrobs around. In the film, a group supposedly runs over a man while driving. They dump his body to cover it up, but are haunted a year later by The Fisherman. Many of the stars are as popular as ever, while a few haven't been able to capture that fame since. Jennifer Love Hewitt starred as Julie Nicole James. After Julie and her friends apparently hit and killed a man while driving, she goes off to college. But a year later, she gets an anonymous message that states, "I know what you did last summer." She once said in an interview, "A lot of the terrifying scenes are not acting at all. I'm really scared."

Jennifer Love Hewitt is pretty much a household name. She was the "It" girl of the late '90s and early 2000s, thanks to roles in "Party of Five," "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and "Can't Hardly Wait." It's even been rumored John Mayer wrote "Your Body is a Wonderland" about her in 2001 (though she's denied it). Since then, her star hasn't shined quite as bright, but she's still carved out a nice career, particularly on TV. She starred on "Ghost Whisperer" for five years. She had prominent roles on "The Client List" and "Criminal Minds" as well. Over the years, she's also released four albums, but none of them made much of a splash. In her personal life, she had some ups and downs (she called off an engagement to Ross McCall in late 2008) but it all worked out: In 2013, she married her "The Client List" co-star Brian Hallisay. They now have two children together.

Sarah Michelle Gellar starred as Helen Shivers. Helen won a beauty pageant just before the accident. She was involved in dumping the body and, well, it doesn't end well for her.

Much like Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar was a bona fide "It" girl for a long time. She became a household name just before "I Know What You Did Last Summer" thanks to to her role on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," which started in 1996 and went until 2003. Many know her for her work as the diabolical Kathryn Merteuil from "Cruel Intentions" too. She met Freddie Prinze Jr. while making "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and the two married in 2002. They have two children. A busy mom, Sarah now spends a lot of her time in the kitchen. In 2015, she helped start Foodstirs, which makes organic baking kits for children and families. In 2017, she released a cookbook called "Stirring Up Fun with Food."

Freddie Prinze Jr. starred as Ray Bronson, Julie's boyfriend. He's one of the characters who makes a pact to dispose of the man's body and not speak about it. Julie and Ray later split. While Julie went to college, he began work as a fisherman.

Through most of the late '90s and early 2000s, Freddie Prinze Jr. was the guy every girl wanted to be with, and who every guy wanted to be. After "I Know What You Did Last Summer," Freddie starred as a heartthrob (obviously) in "She's All That" and "Summer Catch." On the TV front, he is known for his work on "24" in 2010. He's also lent his voice to several animated TV series over the years, including the Disney XD series "Star Wars Rebels." From 2008 to 2012, he worked off and on for WWE as part of the creative staff. He met wife Sarah Michelle Gellar on the set of "I Know What You Did Last Summer," and the two married in 2002. They have two children.

Ryan Phillippe starred as Barry William Cox, Helen's boyfriend and the first of the pact victims to be killed.

Ryan Phillippe became a borderline A-lister for many years after the success of "I Know What You Did Last Summer." Now-millennials and Gen X-ers will never forget him from "Cruel Intentions." He went on to appear in "Crash," "Flags of Our Fathers" and "The Lincoln Lawyer." He's also the main star of USA's "Shooter." His personal life has always been a topic of interest. In 1999, he married his "Cruel Intentions" co-star Reese Witherspoon. They had two children together before splitting in 2006 amid allegations he'd been unfaithful. He went on to date other women (mostly actresses and models) and has a third child with Alexis Knapp. In 2017, he dated model Elsie Hewitt, who accused him of assault. He has vehemently denied her claims and reportedly plans to file a defamation lawsuit.

Bridgette Wilson-Sampras portrayed Elsa Shivers, Helen's sister. The sisters aren't exactly besties.

You don't hear much about Bridgette Wilson-Sampras these days, and she hasn't starred on-screen since 2008. That's okay, because she's now married to one of the greatest tennis players who ever lived, Pete Sampras (seen with him and one of their two sons, Ryan, in 2009). Before retiring from the screen, she appeared in "Billy Madison" as Miss Vaughn and starred opposite Matthew McConaughey in "The Wedding Planner." She dabbled in music in the early 2000s as well.

Johnny Galecki (pictured in 1996) starred as Max Neurick, a teen who was in love with Julie, although those feelings were not reciprocated.

Johnny Galecki was one of the better known actors in "I Know What You Did Last Summer" due to his long-running role on "Roseanne" at the time (he will revive his "Roseanne" character in 2018). Johnny, who has starred on Broadway, fell off the acting map for much of the early 2000s, but had a strong resurgence when he won the role of Leonard Hofstadter on "The Big Bang Theory." He reportedly now earns $1 million per episode. On the personal front, he dated his on-screen girlfriend Kaley Cuoco for two years. They became BFFs after splitting. He suffered a tragic loss in June 2017 when his Santa Margarita, California, ranch was destroyed by a wildfire.

Muse Watson starred as "Ben Willis," the Fisherman who terrorizes the teens.

Muse Watson has had bit roles in an absolute slew of TV shows and films. Over 11 years, he starred on "NCIS" as Michael Franks. He also starred as Charles Westmoreland on "Prison Break" from 2005 to 2008. He can play everything from a killer to a tender con, as he did opposite Julia Roberts in "Something to Talk About." He married in 1997 around the time "I Know What You Did Last Summer" came out. If you include his theater work, Muse has nearly 100 acting credits to his name. How's that for seasoned!

Anne Heche (pictured in 1997) starred as Missy Egan, a reclusive sibling of one of the Fisherman's victims. She had little screen time, but a lasting impact.

Anne Heche was hardly unknown when she starred in "I Know What You Did Last Summer." Afterward, nothing changed. She was and still is a big star. Anne has appeared in "Six Days Seven Nights," "Everwood," "Hung" and too many other things to count. In 2004, she was even nominated for an Emmy for best supporting actress in a miniseries or a movie for her work on "Gracie's Choice." She also got a Tony Award nomination for her work on Broadway's "Twentieth Century." Aside from her acting, Anne was known also for her romantic life in the late '90s, having dating Ellen DeGeneres for three years. In 2002, she welcomed a son with then-husband Coleman Laffoon. In 2007, she filed for divorce and went through a contentious custody battle that was finalized in 2009. Since 2007, she's been with actor James Tupper. In March 2009, she and James welcomed a son.
