Kevin Costner followed up "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" with another smash hit, 1992's "The Bodyguard." That was followed by 1993's "A Perfect World." He was one of the biggest movie stars of the '90s, though that didn't come without backlash — his 1995 flick "Waterworld" was the butt of jokes that decade, and he followed it up with "The Postman," which won five Razzie Awards. He experienced a career resurgence with 2000's "Thirteen Days" and 2003's "Open Range." He switched gears in 2012 and starred in the hit miniseries "Hatfields & McCoys," which earned him an Emmy for best lead actor in a miniseries or movie and a Golden Globe for best actor in a limited series. Kevin continued to act on the big screen but also appeared in his first television series role on Paramount Network's "Yellowstone" in 2018. Kevin has three children with first wife Cindy Silva — daughters Anne and Lily and son Joseph. He has a son, Liam, from a relationship with Bridget Rooney, but eventually went on to marry again, tying the knot with girlfriend Christina Baumgartner in 2004. The two share three children together: Cayden, Hayes and Grace.
Kevin Costner wasn't the only star who played Robin Hood in 1991! Nope, another take on the classic story was released that same year. This one, simply titled "Robin Hood," put Irish actor Patrick Bergin in the leading role. Keep reading to see what Patrick is doing today…
Patrick Bergin's busiest year was certainly 1991. Aside from playing Robin Hood, he also starred alongside Julia Roberts in the thriller "Sleeping With the Enemy." He followed that up with another hit, "Patriot Games," in 1992, and took a turn as Victor Frankenstein that same year in "Frankenstein." He appeared in more films throughout the '90s and '00s including "Durango" in 1999, "Dracula" in 2002 and "Ella Enchanted" in 2004. He can currently be seen on the British soap opera "EastEnders." Patrick's been married once — to Paula Frazier, with whom he shares daughter Tatiana. The two eventually separated and Patrick is reportedly now dating socialite Helen Goldin.
A few years later in 1993, Cary Elwes stepped into Robin Hood's hosiery for "Robin Hood: Men In Tights," a comedic take on the classic tale.
Cary Elwes followed up "Robin Hood: Men In Tights" with plenty more movie roles in the '90s including "The Crush," "The Jungle Book," "Twister" and "Liar Liar." He also had roles on the small screen, playing a character on "Seinfeld" and starring in the HBO miniseries "From the Earth To the Moon." He started the '00s with a recurring role on "The X-Files" and a few years later nabbed his next major starring role in the smash hit horror flick "Saw" in 2004. He returned for the film's 2010 installment, "Saw 3D." Over the last few years, the "Princess bride" alum has appeared on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," "Psych" and Crackle's first streaming drama, "The Art of More." Next up for Cary? He'll be joining the cast of "Stranger Things" for the show's third season in 2019. He's been married to photographer Lisa Marie Kurbikoff since 2000. The two have a daughter together, Dominique.
1938's take on the classic tale of Robin Hood was the film "The Adventures of Robin Hood." Errol Flynn played the young rebel in this version.
Robin Hood in "The Adventures of Robin Hood" was perhaps Errol Flynn's most well-known role. The part catapulted him to worldwide fame and cemented him as a bona fide movie star — enough to later be named 18th on the American Film Institute's list of the greatest heroes in American film history. He also had roles in iconic films including "Captain Blood" in 1935 and Westerns like 1939's "Dodge City," 1940's "Santa Fe Trail" and 1945's "San Antonio." He married three times: once to actress Lili Damita, with whom he had son Sean Flynn, and then to Nora Eddington, with whom he had daughters Deirdre and Rory. His last marriage was to Patrice Wymore, with whom he had another daughter, Arnella, before he passed away in 1959.
1976 saw a different take on Robin Hood's life story — focusing more on the end of his life. Sean Connery brought him to life in 1976's "Robin and Marian" alongside Audrey Hepburn, who played Lady Marian.
Sean Connery had already made a name for himself playing another iconic character — James Bond — before he took on Robin Hood. After "Robin and Marian," the Scottish heartthrob continued his film career, even reprising his Bond role in 1983's "Never Say Never Again." He picked up an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for best supporting actor in 1987's "The Untouchables," and another Golden Globe nomination for his work as Indy's dad in 1989's "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade." His last role came in 2003's "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" ahead of his retirement from acting in 2006. As for his personal life, Sean was married to actress Diane Cilento from 1962 until 1973 (they share son Jason Connery). He's still married to his second wife, painter Micheline Roquebrune, whom he wed back in 1975.
Did you know Robin Hood even made it to the big screen back in the days of silent films? Douglas Fairbanks played the character in 1922's "Robin Hood."
Douglas Fairbanks made a name for himself during the silent film era, largely due to his turn as Robin Hood. He also starred in silent films like "The Thief of Bagdad" and "The Mark of Zorro," making him one of the biggest movie stars of the time. He married three times — first to Anna Beth Sully, with whom he had son Douglas Fairbanks Jr. He then married fellow movie star Mary Pickford and the two became a Hollywood power couple until their split in 1936. He was married to Sylvia Ashley at the time of his death from a heart attack in 1939.
Marking one of the darker portrayals of the Robin Hood character? 2010's "Robin Hood," which saw Russell Crowe in the titular role.
Russell Crowe was already a major movie star before he played Robin Hood. His next smash hit came with 2012's "Les Miserables," and after that he starred in other big films like "Man of Steel" in 2013 and "Noah" in 2014. His most recent flick, 2018's "Boy Erased" with Nicole Kidman, has drawn raves. When it comes to his personal life, Russell was married to fellow Aussie Danielle Spencer from 2003 until 2012. They share sons Charles and Tennyson.
Michael Praed portrayed Robin Hood on the British TV take on the legendary character, "Robin of Sherwood." The show ran from 1984 to 1986 and in the States, it aired on Showtime. So where is Michael today?
Robin Hood was Michael Praed's best known role, but he nabbed another notable part on a very popular TV series a few years later: Prince Michael of Moldavia on "Dynasty" from 1985 until 1986. From there, he starred in a string of TV movies in the '90s and the TV show "The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne" in 2000. More recently, he's appeared on the British soap opera "Emmerdale" as Frank Clayton. When it comes to Michael's personal life, he's currently married to actress Josefina Gabrielle. He has two children with his first wife, Karen Landau.
In the '50s, Robin Hood made his mark on television via the British TV series "The Adventures of Robin Hood" from 1955 to 1959. Playing the famous Robin that time? British actor Richard Greene.
Like many other actors, the role of Robin Hood was Richard Greene's most famous part. He starred in a few other TV shows including 1967's "Off to See the Wizard" and 1969's "The Doctors" after hanging up his Robin Hood hat. He continued to work steadily through the '70s, with his last few parts taking place in the early '80s on TV shows "Scarf Jack" and "Squadron." Richard passed away in 1985 of cardiac arrest. He married twice, first to Patricia Medina, second to Beatriz Summers, with whom he had son Peter. He also had a daughter, Patricia.
