Celebrated actress Sophia Loren was treated in a Swiss hospital after falling down and suffering several bone fractures including to her femur and hip.
The 89-year-old Italian star fell in the bathroom of her home in Geneva, Switzerland, and required emergency surgery to repair the damage to her bones, her rep told People magazine in late September. News of the incident was first reported on the Instagram page belonging to the Oscar winner's namesake restaurant chain.
Since then, her manager has shared an update on the screen siren's injuries and recovery.

On Sept. 24, Sophia Loren Restaurant wrote on Instagram (in Italian, as translated to English), "A fall at her home in Geneva today caused Ms. Loren hip fractures. Operated with a positive outcome, she will now have to observe a short period of recovery and follow a road to rehabilitation. Thankfully everything worked out for the best and the Lady will be back with us very soon."
Sophia's two adult sons were by her side at the hospital.

After undergoing surgery to repair multiple fractures following a Sept. 24 fall at her home in Switzerland, Sophia Loren has begun to heal.
"Everything [is] going well," the star's manager, Carlo Giusti, told People magazine nearly two weeks later on Oct. 5, noting that the surgery went "extremely well" and that Sophia was "slowly recovering."
However, he added, "At least a few months of rehabilitation are needed."
He confirmed that the 89-year-old Oscar winner's sons, Carlo Ponti Jr., 54, and Edoardo Ponti, 50, have been with her in Switzerland as she recovers from her femur and hip fractures.

The fall has affected Sophia Loren's schedule and her restaurants. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the iconic actress was due to open a Sophia Loren Restaurant in the Italian city of Bari on Sept. 26 — the fourth bearing her name.
In addition, the 89-year-old actress was set to receive honorary citizenship from Bari. In light of the fall and subsequent surgery, her engagements have been canceled.

Sophia Loren won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1961 for "Two Women." At the time, she was first actor to win an Oscar for a non-English-language performance. She was again honored by the Academy in 1991 when she won an honorary Oscar. The "Marriage Italian Style" star has also won a Grammy and a Golden Globe.
When she received her honorary Oscar, the Academy called her "one of the greatest treasures of world cinema, who, in a career rich with memorable performances, has added permanent luster to our art form."

The Hollywood Reporter notes Sophia Loren last appeared in public at the Armani fashion show during the 80th Venice Film Festival on Sept. 2.
The actress, who turned 89 on Sept. 20 — just a few days before her fall — spoke to AARP in late 2020 about staying young.
"Sometimes when I say I'm 86, I don't believe it. I feel 20!" she said. "When I look in the mirror, I cheer for myself. I don't ask, 'Are you great?' or 'Are you beautiful?' No! It's how I feel inside, how secure I am, how happy I am. That's what matters."
