Popularity Plunge for Selena Gomez as She Loses Almost 190K Followers After Tearful Immigration Video

On Monday, January 27, the former Disney Channel star, 32, shared — and then deleted — an alarming video on her Instagram Stories of herself sobbing over the recent ICE raids ordered by President Donald Trump. Despite Gomez's genuine emotion, many have been hitting her account's "unfollow" button.

In the haunting footage, Gomez wept as she said, "I just wanted to say that I'm so sorry. All my people are getting attacked, the children. I don't understand. I'm so sorry. I wish I could do something, but I can't. I don't know what to do. I'll try everything, I promise."
According to CritiqueJeu, since the update, the Emilia Pérez actress lost 707,880 Instagram followers over the last 30 days. Since the Oscar nominations — for which she was not nominated — came out on January 23, nearly 190,000 Instagram followers parted ways with Gomez.

Co-founder and editor of the outlet, Paul Lenglet, said of the tricky situation, "Selena Gomez had a great end to 2024, but the start of 2025 has not been so gentle on her. The star has been facing many criticisms over her participation and performance on Emilia Pérez, a film directed and filmed in Paris, but with a story that takes place in Mexico."
"The film's backlash, especially from Mexican audiences, is now combined with backlash from her video condemning the deportation of Mexican immigrants by ICE," he explained. "Gomez has been known for publicly speaking out, but this can alienate different segments of her fanbase — and potential Rare Beauty, her makeup brand, customers." 

Right-wing commentator Megyn Kelly called the "Same Old Love" singer "unwell" for being extremely candid to the public.
"Anybody who takes their phone, works up in tears and posts a video of themselves crying into their phone is sick. That's a sick person," she said during a recent episode of "The Megyn Kelly Show" podcast. "Tears happen. They tend to happen privately."

Gomez was at the center of another public scandal when tweets allegedly written by her Emilia Pérez costar Karla Sofía Gascón resurfaced where she reportedly called the "Come & Get It" artist a "rich rat."
However, the Spanish actress claimed she did not pen the salacious messages shared on X, formerly known as Twitter. "It's not mine, of course," Gascón claimed to CNN.

"I have never said anything about my colleague," she emphasized. "I would never refer to her that way."
According to the post in question, Gascón allegedly stated Gomez was "a rich rat who plays the poor b—— whenever she can and will never stop bothering her ex-boyfriend and his wife," referring to her ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber and his wife, Hailey Bieber.
