On April 8, a total solar eclipse crossed North America, giving some 44 million people across 13 states a view of "totality" when the sky went dark as the moon blocked the sun. Countless more Americans witnessed partial versions of the eclipse. While entertainers like Reese Witherspoon hopped on Instagram to show off their eclipse-ready garb, political figures including President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump — and even NASA's official X account for the moon — also marked the rare cosmic event on social media.

"Yes, we will save America by plunging it into complete and total darkness with my giant head. Nothing says, 'I won't be a dictator' like blocking out the sun," Jimmy Kimmel said on the April 8 episode of "Live" after showing Donald Trump's eclipse-campaign ad.
He also teased President Joe Biden for his eclipse post in the monologue, joking, "President Grandpa put up a message warning us not to look up today."
After playing a clip of Biden wearing protective glasses while saying, "Folks, enjoy the eclipse, but play it safe, don't be silly," the late-night host laughed. "'That's right, don't be silly. There's no time for malarcky and we won't tolerate it,'" Kimmel quipped.
"Last time the sun dared to pull a stunt like this was in 2017, when our then-leader stared directly at it and he said not today, sun, not today. he wasant wearing any wimpy cardboard glasses. Trump handles an eclipse the same way he does a porn star — unprotected."

"Honoring and feeling into this Solar Eclipse. Eclipses are all about new beginnings but this one has such an element of closure—about letting go so you can walk through a new portal and move into your power.
This eclipse is in Aries ♈️ which is about our souls purpose – our life's mission – so it really invites you to release anything that blocks you from aligning with your true soul fulfillment. It is about understanding that your pure soul – your essence – is worthy of love and acceptance no matter what. Everything that makes you dynamic, that isn't easy, that can be perceived as a flaw or a shadow side of you… it's all about encompassing the darkness with the light 🤍 We're here to have this very human experience for a reason 🙏🏽.
Wherever you are, whether you may be able to see the eclipse or not, it will be felt energetically around the world – so I hope you take a moment to connect, fill yourself with love, meditate with the energy, let go of what no longer serves you… The vibration that's being created right now will last about two weeks, so there is a lot of time to work with this energy – take time to reflect, go in, sit with yourself – and just ask yourself what doesn't belong to you? It's time to align with you – and chose YOU. Who are you and what do YOU want? What is your soul here to do and manifest? Sending so much love and light ❤️🫶🏽💫" —Jessica Alba, on Instagram

"Happy eclipse day! I'm so glad to see all of you here in the Ed Sullivan Theater, because it means that my eclipse glasses worked. And that my retinas are still intact," Stephen Colbert joked on the April 8 edition of "Late Night."
Elsewhere in his monologue, Colbert took aim at the "dumbest news coverage" of the cosmic event, beginning with CNN's story, "Animals at Dallas Zoo react to total solar eclipse."
"Thank you, CNN. That is news you can use," Colbert joked. "I wish they'd give more animal takes on current events. I want to see 'Breaking: Ringtail lemur reacts to RFK Jr.'s VP pick."

Fox News anchor Dana Perino said on "America's Newsroom" on April 8 that the U.S.-Mexico border would be "directly in the path of totality" when the "moon covers the sun for nearly four minutes."
Added co-anchor Bill Hemmer, "We are told that officials are bracing for higher traffic than usual and that means a real opportunity for smugglers and cartels and migrants to come right in."
