The Supreme Court is gearing up to make another big decision about abortion and reproductive rights.
On April 24, the nine justices heard arguments tied to whether provisions of Idaho's near-total abortion ban can be enforced, as the Gem State's new stance might conflict with a federal law that ensures emergency medical care for patients, including pregnant women. The federal law — the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act or EMTALA — requires hospitals to perform any treatment, including an abortion, to save a patient's life.
The argument comes two years after the conservative-leaning SCOTUS overturned Roe v. Wade.
While arguments were being heard, many lawmakers — particularly female Democrats — sounded off on the hearing and criticized Idaho's law.
Vice President Kamala Harris, meanwhile, promised that "if extremists in Congress pass a national abortion ban, President Joe Biden will veto it."

"Today, SCOTUS heard a challenge to #EMTALA, an over 30-year-old law requiring hospitals to provide care in life threatening emergencies, which can include abortion care. In March, I was proud to lead 257 of my colleagues in an amicus brief urging the court to uphold the intent of #EMTALA to protect patients' rights and physicians' independence." —Rep. Jerry Nadler
