"Saturday Night Live" can be hit or miss, but the April 13, 2024, episode hosted by Ryan Gosling, featuring country music singer Chris Stapleton as the musical guest, had some of the best sketches the show has seen in a long time.
From the excellent opening monologue — in which Ryan's "The Fall Guy" co-star Emily Blunt joined him to sing about his efforts to let go of his Ken character from the "Barbie" movie, all to the tune of Taylor Swift's breakup anthem "All Too Well" — to the cut-for-time "Papyrus 2" sketch, which is a sequel to Ryan's classic 2017 original about a man who can't cope with the fact that the epic "Avatar" films used the regular old Papyrus font for the films' titles — it was an excellent show.
But the best sketch of all, which exploded on social media, was a wild and wonderful segment that saw Ryan and cast member Mikey Day playing two '90s MTV cartoon staples. It was so absurd, veteran cast member Heidi Gardner broke repeatedly, unable to control her laughter every time she looked at the characters.

Heidi spoke to Vulture about the skit — and her inability to hold it together without laughing — after it aired. "I just couldn't prepare for what I saw," she said. "I really tried. I even saw Mikey out of the corner of my eye seconds before I went live. I saw the red shorts. I knew I couldn't look over there again. Mikey even told me later that he was bending down and hiding himself so I wouldn't see him."
Heidi said she also "lost it" during dress rehearsal. "I'm thinking about it right now and laughing. I recovered and tried to tell myself in between dress and the live show, 'You can't laugh like that again.' I was trying to imagine seeing him in my head so I was prepared for it."
