The new period psychodrama "Mary & George," a seven-part limited series from Starz, debuted in April and drops new episodes every Friday.
The show — which Starz describes as being "inspired by the scandalous true story of a treacherous mother and son who schemed, seduced and killed to conquer the Court of England and the bed of King James I" — stars Academy Award winner Julianne Moore and Nicholas Galitzine, the actor who's been charming audiences in projects like "Red, White & Royal Blue," "Purple Hearts" and "Bottoms" and will next appear in the buzzy novel-based movie "The Idea of You" opposite Anne Hathaway.
Moore plays Mary Villiers, Countess of Buckingham, "who in 17th century England molded her beautiful son, George, to seduce King James I and become his all-powerful lover," Starz explains. "Through outrageous scheming, the pair rose from humble beginnings to become one of the richest, most titled and influential players the English court had ever seen, and the king's most trusted advisors."
Galitzine plays her son, George Villiers, "a naive romantic who alongside his ruthless mother was prepared to stop at nothing to get to the top and prove to himself that he can be defined by more than just his beauty and make his mark on history," Starz reveals.

Julianne Moore is Mary Villiers and Nicholas Galitzine is her son George Villiers in 2024's "Mary & George."
According to Starz, "The show is inspired by the unbelievable true story of Mary Villiers, who moulded her beautiful and charismatic son to seduce King James VI of Scotland and I of England and become his all-powerful lover. Through outrageous scheming, the pair rose from humble beginnings to become the richest, most titled and influential players the English court had ever seen — and the king's most trusted advisors. And with England's place on the world stage under threat from a Spanish invasion and rioters taking to the streets to denounce the king, the stakes could not have been higher.
Prepared to stop at nothing and armed with her ruthless political steel, Mary married her way up the ranks, bribed politicians, colluded with criminals and clawed her way into the heart of the establishment, making it her own.
"Mary & George" is an audacious historical psychodrama about a treacherous mother and son who schemed, seduced and killed to conquer the Court of England and the bed of its king."
