Johnny Depp is arguably one of the most engaging actors of all time. Over the last 30 years, the Kentucky-born entertainer has charmed Hollywood with his broad range by portraying everyone from a guitar-wielding greaser and a swoon-worthy romantic lead to multiple quirky luminaries, and, of course, one deliciously deceitful pirate. Off-screen, he's made headlines as a heartthrob with the ability to woo everyone from Winona Ryder and Kate Moss in the 1990s to now-ex Amber Heard in more recent years. In anticipation of "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" hitting theaters on May 26, 2017, Wonderwall.com is taking a look at Johnny's life in pictures. Read on!

Johnny Depp was born in Owensboro, Kentucky, on June 9, 1963, to parents Betty Sue, a waitress, and John Christopher Depp, a civil engineer. Johnny and his four older siblings were shuffled around to more than 20 different places before the family settled in Miramar, Florida. At age 12, Johnny's mom gave him a guitar and he began playing in garage bands. After dropping out of high school, a few of his bands, like The Kids and Rock City Angels, enjoyed some success.

In 1983, Johnny Depp married his singer and bass player's sister, makeup artist Lori Anne Allison (pictured in 1997). She eventually introduced him to Nicolas Cage. Nic encouraged Johnny to pursue acting instead of rock'n'roll. By 1985, Johnny and Lori had divorced. Later in the decade, he'd get serious with "Twin Peaks" star Sherilyn Fenn.

Johnny Depp's first major film role was in the 1984 classic horror flick "A Nightmare on Elm Street." The baby-faced actor played one of Freddy Krueger's victims.

FOX's television series "21 Jump Street," which premiered in 1987, helped solidify Johnny Depp as a teen heartthrob in the late 1980s.

In 1990, Johnny Depp appeared in John Waters' "Cry-Baby" as a guitar-playing, leather-jacket-wearing troublemaker with a soft side. Though the film, which also starred Ricki Lake, didn't do well at the box office, it went on to become a bona fide cult classic.

Following "Cry-Baby," Johnny Depp's next stab at playing a quirky character was when he took on the title role in Tim Burton's "Edward Scissorhands." The film was adored by critics, achieved commercial success and set Johnny up as a leading man in Hollywood. It was also the first of many collaborations with Tim. Johnny earned his first best actor Golden Globe nomination for his performance in the movie, where he met future fiancée Winona Ryder.

Johnny Depp dated Winona Ryder in the early '90s and famously got her name tattooed on his right arm. But by 1994, after they'd ended their engagement, Johnny had his tat altered, removing the last two letters of Winona's first name so that it read "Wino Forever." Johnny went on to get many, many more tattoos.

Sure, Johnny Depp made us fall for him in "Edward Scissorhands." But in 1993's "Benny & Joon," he proved he could be a heart-stopping romantic lead opposite Mary Stuart Masterson. Plus, he earned a best actor Golden Globe nom.

We hope to see Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio share screen time again, as they did in equally memorable performances in 1993's "What's Eating Gilbert Grape." The New York Times' Janet Maslin called Johnny's performance "tender" and "disarming" in her review of the film. We'd have to agree!

One extremely good-looking, high-profile couple in the 1990s was definitely Johnny Depp and Kate Moss, who dated for four years. In a 2012 interview with Vanity Fair, Kate admitted to "years and years of crying" as a result of their split.

After meeting while filming "The Ninth Gate," Johnny Depp and French actress-singer Vanessa Paradis were romantically linked from 1998 to 2012. The couple never married. "I never found myself needing that piece of paper," Johnny once said. "Marriage is really from soul to soul, heart to heart. You don't need somebody to say, okay, you're married. If Vanessa wanted to get hitched, why not?" Though they didn't exchange vows, they did have two beautiful children…

Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis share two children: daughter Lily-Rose Melody Depp, born in 1999, and son John "Jack" Christopher Depp III, born in 2002. In 2007, Lily-Rose spent time in the hospital recovering from an E. coli infection that threatened to shut down her kidneys. To thank the hospital, Johnny donated $2 million, dressed up as Captain Jack Sparrow, his character in "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," and spent hours reading to the kids there. Lily-Rose is now entering early adulthood and making a name for herself as an actress and model.

Continuing to solidify his place as a great actor, Johnny Depp shared the screen with Marlon Brando in 1994's "Don Juan DeMarco" and Al Pacino in 1997's "Donnie Brasco." And in the dramatic 2000 biography "Before Night Falls," Johnny gave a compelling double performance as crossdresser Bon Bon and Lieutenant Victor opposite Javier Bardem.

Playing opposite Penelope Cruz in 2001's "Blow," Johnny Depp portrayed George Jung, the man who established the American cocaine market in the 1970s. Johnny has gone on to play alongside a handful of leading ladies, including Charlize Theron, Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Marion Cotillard, Eva Mendes, Christina Ricci and Juliette Binoche.

Johnny Depp appeared in Tim Burton's 2005 "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," reimagining the role made famous by Gene Wilder in 1971's "Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory." Though there were some critics who just couldn't get past their beloved childhood memories of the original, many praised Johnny's colorful performance.

Possibly Johnny Depp's most memorable and beloved performance is as the hilariously devious pirate Captain Jack Sparrow in 2003's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," for which he was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar and won a SAG Award. The film's success spawned a franchise that has grossed more than $3 billion.

Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter appeared together in Tim Burton's 2007 musical "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street." Johnny was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for his work and won a Golden Globe for his performance in the dark musical.

In 2009, Johnny Depp was named People's Sexiest Man Alive for the second time. (He'd also won in 2003.) That same year, his crime drama "Public Enemies" was released.

When it was announced that Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie were doing a film together, most of us couldn't wait to see these two fine actors impress on screen. Unfortunately, when romantic thriller "The Tourist" was released in 2010, it was an utter disappointment. Still, Johnny was nominated for a best actor Golden Globe for his performance.

Johnny Depp met actress Amber Heard when they worked together on the 2011 dramatic comedy "The Rum Diary," based on the novel by Hunter S. Thompson. They started dating soon after.

In Vanity Fair's November 2011 cover story, the magazine declared Johnny Depp to be Hollywood's "best paid" actor with earnings in the $300 million range just for "Pirates" due to "a gross-profit-sharing deal brokered with Disney." Said Johnny of his hefty paycheck: "Basically, if they're going to pay me the stupid money right now, I'm going to take it. I have to. I mean, it's not for me. Do you know what I mean? At this point, it's for my kids." We're sure the check could have helped him buy an even bigger island than he'd already bought. That's right, in 2004 Johnny reportedly paid $3.6 million for an island in the Bahamas.

Guitar-playing Johnny Depp never forgot his rock roots. In 2012, he performed at the Staples Center in Los Angeles with Aerosmith. He's played slide guitar on Oasis songs, acoustic guitar in the movie "Chocolat" and has appeared on the soundtrack to "Once Upon a Time in Mexico." He's played with the band P, a group with members like Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea. He's appeared in a Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers music video, made a cameo as the Mad Hatter in Avril Lavigne's video for "Alice," and he appeared with Natalie Portman in Paul McCartney's music video for "My Valentine." He also once co-owned the Los Angeles nightclub The Viper Room, which opened in 1993. In 2015, he formed the rock supergroup Hollywood Vampires with Alice Cooper and Joe Perry.

Johnny Depp performed live with Marilyn Manson at the Revolver Golden Gods Awards in 2012 and played lead guitar and drums on a cover of Carly Simon's "You're So Vain" on limited editions of Manson's 2012 album "Born Villain."

In 2012 — one year after he voiced the lead character in the animated film "Rango" — Robin Eckert, a U.C. Irvine medical professor, got the okay from a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge to sue Johnny Depp. The professor alleged Johnny's bodyguards attacked her at an Iggy and the Stooges concert in Hollywood. Robin said bodyguards handcuffed her, dragged her on the ground through the VIP area, causing her pants to fall off, worsening her fibromyalgia condition. Though Johnny was said to not have actively taken part in the incident, the actor settled with Robin for an undisclosed amount.

Despite all of the praise Johnny Depp received in Hollywood for his acting talent, Tinseltown didn't hesitate to read him the riot act in 2013 when he played Tonto in "The Lone Ranger." He was nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award for the less-than stellar performance. Many were also offended by his portrayal of the Native American character, as Johnny has yet to prove he has Native American heritage, as he's previously claimed.

In January 2014, sources confirmed to outlets like People magazine and Us Weekly that Johnny Depp had popped the question to girlfriend Amber Heard after she was spotted with a huge sparkler on her left-hand ring finger. Johnny confirmed his engagement on "Today" in April 2014 and joked on "The Late Show with David Letterman" about the large "female engagement ring" he'd started wearing because it was "too big for my girl."

On Feb. 15, 2014, Johnny Depp was honored with the Distinguished Artisan Award at the Make-Up Artist and Hair Stylist Guild Awards. "This is a great honor, but glancing up at the screen I realize what a ridiculous thing I've done," Johnny joked after images of himself in costume in films like "Edward Scissorhands" and "Alice in Wonderland" were shown at the ceremony. "I found, oddly, that I liked being encased in all of that stuff," he added. "I try something different each time as an actor." And we love you for it, Johnny!

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard got hitched on Feb. 9, 2015, and celebrated with a wedding ceremony on his private island in the Bahamas. But their passionate romance came to a crashing halt in May 2016 when Amber filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. Things really escalated when the actress obtained a restraining order against Johnny, alleging multiple instances of abuse. The exes settled their split that summer with an agreement that Johnny would pay $7 million to the ACLU and Children's Hospital of Los Angeles on Amber's behalf, though he maintains he's never been abusive.

More legal woes: Johnny Depp launched a $25 million dollar fraud lawsuit against his former business managers in January 2017, claiming "gross mismanagement" of his affairs. His business managers then countersued Johnny, claiming his lavish lifestyle cost more than $2 million a month and was the source of his financial troubles. Among the excessive spending cited? That Johnny spends $30,000 a month on wine. There's something you don't hear every day!
