One of the most iconic hotels in Las Vegas history has closed its doors. At 3 a.m. on April 2, just two days before its 67th anniversary, the Tropicana Hotel — a Rat Pack-era hangout that was secretly under mafia control for years — shuffled its last deck. The building will be demolished (and possibly imploded) to make way for a Major League Baseball stadium.
During its six-decade run, the Tropicana became one of the most prominent hotels on the famed Las Vegas Strip. With a price tag of $15 million in 1967, it was the most expensive build in Vegas history at the time and became known as the "Tiffany of the Strip." Celebrities and even United States presidents flocked to the Trop over the years, and part of the James Bond film "Diamonds Are Forever" was shot there.
Elizabeth Taylor (seen here in August 1959 watching then-fiancé Eddie Fisher perform at the hotel) was a regular at the Trop.
