For just the sixth time in U.S. history, a sitting member of the House of Representatives was expelled. On Dec. 1, 2023, the House voted overwhelmingly (311-114) to oust embattled New York Congressman George Santos for alleged finance crimes.
Since being sworn in in January 2023, the politician has been mired in controversy, much of which was tied to blatant lies about his past. The Republican even admitted to lying about his professional and educational background. Earlier in 2023, he was hit with a 23-count federal indictment for a variety of theft and fraud charges involving his congressional campaign. He has pleaded not guilty.
After getting the Congressional boot, George told CNN, "To hell with this place."
Weeks earlier, a Republican-led panel concluded that the now-former lawmaker "blatantly stole from his campaign" and spent donors' money shopping at places like Ferragamo and Hermes, getting Botox and visiting the adult website OnlyFans.com, CNBC reported.
On the heels of his ouster, many from the political and entertainment spheres sounded off about the New York politician. Click through to see what's being said about George and his 11-month run in the House...

"Right, wrong, or indifferent as it relates to the George Santos expulsion, it seems America is getting very comfortable disregarding basic tenants of our constitution, namely these days it seems everyone is guilty until proven innocent and not vice versa… especially republicans!" —Donald Trump Jr.

"I'm not surprised. The more important picture is we have a colleague in the Senate who's actually done much more sinister and serious kinds of things, Senator Menendez. He needs to go. If you are going to expel Santos, how can you allow somebody like Menendez to remain in the Senate? Menendez is really a Senator for Egypt, not New Jersey." —Senator John Fetterman via "The View"

"Expelling an elected representative is a serious matter. But here, it was justified:
George Santos misappropriated hundreds of thousands of dollars of campaign money, stole donor identities to fund his extravagant lifestyle, and has been indicted for fraud and financial crimes.
I voted yes." —Congressman Adam Schiff

"George Santos is an a**, who, like every other American, deserves the presumption of innocence until proven guilty in a court of law. Charges are not a conviction." —Congresswoman Nancy Mace

"George Santos is not worthy of serving in the House of Representatives. He will be be convicted of the crimes of which he was accused. This is the People's House — and although the House Ethics Committee findings were damning, the people of New York's third congressional district should decide who represents them. I will always side on giving power to the voters." —Congresswoman Nikema Williams
