On March 29, Dolly Parton took to Instagram to share her reaction to Beyonce's new cover of "Jolene" on her "Cowboy Carter" album: "Wow, I just heard 'Jolene.' Beyonce is giving that girl some trouble and she deserves it!" wrote the country music legend, who collaborated with the Grammy winner on two tracks from the album.
Dolly's not the only superstar who makes an appearance on the album: "Cowboy Carter" also features Willie Nelson and Linda Martell — the first Black woman to play at the Grand Ole Opry — plus Miley Cyrus, Post Malone and more.
The album's lead single, "Texas Hold 'Em," promptly hit No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs list when it debuted back in February, making Beyonce the first Black woman to top the chart.
The singer revealed on Instagram that the album "was born out of an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed … and it was very clear that I wasn't." From there, she launched "a deeper dive into the history of country music" that inspired her to find a new perspective.
"The criticisms I faced when I first entered this genre forced me to propel past the limitations that were put on me. Act ii is a result of challenging myself, and taking my time to bend and blend genres together to create this body of work," Beyonce explained, adding that "it feels good to see how music can unite so many people around the world."
