On Jan. 22, 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court protected a woman's right to have an abortion. In 2022, though, things changed after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade — and five decades of precedent — leaving the legality of abortion to the states, half of which almost immediately eliminated a woman's right to choose. The 5-4 decision was made in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, a case focused on a Mississippi law barring most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. The SCOTUS ruling was hardly surprising, as the decision was leaked to the press in early May 2022.
Celebrities in Hollywood, in politics and beyond on both sides of the political aisle took to social media after the news broke to share their reactions…
Donald Trump, for example, said, "Today's decision, which is the biggest WIN for LIFE in a generation, along with other decisions that have been announced recently, were only made possible because I delivered everything as promised, including nominating and getting three highly respected and strong Constitutionalists confirmed to the United States Supreme Court. These major Victories prove that even though the Radical Left is doing everything in their power to destroy our Country, your Rights are being protected, the Country is being defended, and there is still hope and time to Save America!"
On the 51st anniversary of Roe v. Wade, look back at how more celebrities reacted to the SCOTUS' historic about-face in 2022…

"It's wild for the United States to take such a step backwards in women's rights. It's almost like the U.S. invaded Afghanistan to defeat the Taliban and then came back to the U.S. like, 'Actually those guys have some pretty good ideas.' And now the truth is that this is the culmination of a 50 year plan for the conservative movement to reshape the courts for this very purpose. And say what you want about it, but you gotta admit, man, the conservative movement is just that dedicated to protecting life. I mean, not protecting life from the coronavirus, or school shootings, or from lack of healthcare, or climate change, or poverty, or homelessness." –Trevor Noah

"People will still get abortions. These procedures won't stop just because Roe v. Wade is overturned. This will only prevent safe, legal abortions from taking place," Padma Lakshmi tweeted. "People who have the money, time, and resources will still find avenues for their procedures. But the most vulnerable of our community? What choices are those individuals, who are mostly BIPOC, left with? This is the catalyst for a public health crisis. The right to decide when to start a family or not is a choice every individual should be able to make on their terms when the time is right for them. This freedom and dignity is something we should all fight to preserve. I wish more people understood that the decision to have an abortion is deeply personal and complex. It's a decision that should be treated with compassion and empathy, not vilified or criminalized."

"Today's Supreme Court ruling overturning #RoeVsWade will have deadly consequences, with the harm falling hardest on people of color who already face disproportionate discrimination in our country and grapple with a severe maternal mortality crisis. If abortion is banned nationwide, pregnancy-related deaths could increase 21 percent nationwide, and 33 percent among Black women. Banning abortion will disproportionately impact people of color, LGBTQ+ communities, people struggling to make ends meet, young people, and those living in rural areas. Banning abortion is about controlling women and trans men. It is about white supremacy, the patriarchy and misogyny. It's a sad day for America." –Alyssa Milano

"I hope the 53% of white women who just couldn't stomach voting for @HillaryClinton are happy that they've just ensured that their daughters grow up in #Gilead. A woman's right to choose is a HEALTH decision. A PERSONAL health decision. I'm a Christian and know that. Further, I hope people finally get that VOTING MATTERS! A corrupt, racist, money AND power hungry imp got to put THREE Supreme Court justices on the bench. Those three said they would protect precedent KNOWING their goal was to overturn every right they deemed inappropriate. This all happened because not enough people care enough to vote. And not enough people who DO vote choose leaders that care about everyone — not just the people who think, love and look like them. This is bad. This is VERY bad. And I hope all the smug women who are pro-life realize that if they have a life-threatening pregnancy or if they or their daughter is raped or the victim of incest and a pregnancy is the result THEY or their precious little gumdrop will have to carry that child to term too." –Yvette Nicole Brown
