Spain's former king, Juan Carlos — who abdicated in 2014 in favor of his son, who's now King Felipe VI — celebrates his birthday on Jan. 5. But he didn't get to do it in Spain in 2021: In August 2020, Juan Carlos announced in a letter posted to the Spanish royal family's official website that he'd left the country in the midst of a corruption scandal, sending himself into exile. On Jan. 8, 2020, Britain's Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan dropped a bombshell when they announced plans "to step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen."
