Spain's former king, Juan Carlos — who abdicated in 2014 in favor of his son, who's now King Felipe VI — celebrates his birthday on Jan. 5. But he didn't get to do it in Spain in 2021: In August 2020, Juan Carlos announced in a letter posted to the Spanish royal family's official website that he'd left the country in the midst of a corruption scandal, sending himself into exile. He was born in 1938 in Rome while his family was in exile; he took the Spanish throne in 1975. Juan Carlos isn't the only Spanish royal with a birthday in January…

King Felipe VI of Spain was born on Jan. 31, 1968. He's the third child and only son of the former King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia. Felipe became monarch when his father abdicated in 2014.

On Jan. 8, 2020, Britain's Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan dropped a bombshell when they announced plans "to step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen." The move was dubbed "Megxit" by the U.K. media and soon saw the couple officially leave — though Queen Elizabeth II did not allow them to continue to support her — a few months later and relocate to Meghan's native California to begin their own philanthropic and humanitarian work.

Denmark's royal twins — Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine — celebrate their birthday on Jan. 8. The youngest of Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary's four children were born in 2011.

Duchess Kate was born on Jan. 9, 1982, in Reading, England, to Michael and Carole Middleton, a flight dispatcher and flight attendant, respectively, who went on to found the successful event supply company Party Pieces. Kate — who will be queen consort one day when husband Prince William ascends the British throne — joined the U.K.'s royal family in 2011.

Britain's Princess Michael of Kent — née Baroness Marie-Christine von Reibnitz — was born on Jan. 15, 1945, in what's now the Czech Republic. Husband Prince Michael (her second spouse) is the paternal first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II who, like the monarch, is a grandchild of Britain's late King George V. Princess Michael is often seen at royal family events with her husband and children, Lord Frederick Windsor and Lady Gabriella Kingston.

Queen Elizabeth's fourth great-grandchild, Mia Tindall, was born on Jan. 17, 2014. Mia is the eldest daughter of Princess Anne's daughter, Olympic equestrian Zara Tindall, and former England rugby champ Mike Tindall.

Jan. 18 marks the birthday of Princess Claire of Belgium, the former Claire Coombs, who's a land surveyor. She was born in 1974 and married Prince Laurent — the younger brother of Belgium's King Philippe — in 2003. They have three kids.

Princess Margriet of the Netherlands was born on Jan. 19, 1943. She's the maternal aunt of King Willem-Alexander and holds the eighth and last position in the line of succession to the Dutch throne. January is a special month for the royal for another reason: On Jan. 10, 1967 — nine days before her 24th birthday — Margriet married Pieter van Vollenhoven (seen here), with whom she has four children.

Jan. 19 marks the birthday of King Carl XVI Gustaf's elder sister, Princess Birgitta of Sweden, who was born in 1937. Birgitta — seen here on the left alongside sister Princess Margaretha, Mrs. Ambler — became Princess of Hohenzollern upon her 1961 marriage to Germany's Prince Johann Georg of Hohenzollern.

Queen Mathilde of the Belgians was born on Jan. 20, 1973. The former speech therapist married now-King Philippe of the Belgians in 1999 and welcomed four children with him before he ascended the throne in 2013.

Britain's Sophie, Countess of Wessex was born Sophie Rhys-Jones on Jan. 20, 1965. She wed Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip's youngest child, Prince Edward, in 1999 when she was still working as a public relations executive. She's the mother of the monarch's youngest two grandchildren: Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn.

The future queen of Norway, Princess Ingrid Alexandra (seated, as seen with her family during her 2019 confirmation), was born on Jan. 21, 2004. Her parents are Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit. Someday, she'll serve as her country's second ever queen regnant.

Back on Jan. 22, 2018, Britain's Princess Eugenie — the daughter of Prince Andrew and ex-wife Sarah, Duchess of York — and Jack Brooksbank, a brand manager for Casamigos tequila, announced their engagement after seven years of dating. "Her Royal Highness and Mr. Brooksbank became engaged in Nicaragua earlier this month," the royal family confirmed on social media. The couple (seen here in their official engagement photo) married at St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle in Windsor, England, the following October.

Princess Caroline of Hanover — who the world originally knew as Princess Caroline of Monaco — was born on Jan. 23, 1957, nine months after the marriage of her parents: the late Prince Rainier III of Monaco and American actress Grace Kelly. Caroline, a mother of four, took third husband Prince Ernst August of Hanover's title upon their marriage in 1999…

Princess Caroline of Monaco married Prince Ernst August of Hanover on Jan. 23, 1999 — which happened to be her 42nd birthday. She was pregnant with their only child — her fourth and his third — at the time. Daughter Princess Alexandra was born in July the same year. The couple reportedly split in 1999 but have yet to divorce.

Jan. 24, 2012, marks the day Princess Athena of Denmark — who's the second child of Prince Joachim and his second wife, Princess Marie — was born. Her grandmother is Denmark's current monarch, Queen Margrethe II. Athena is seen here at her father's 50th birthday party in 2019 with her parents, brother Prince Henrik and half brothers Prince Felix and Prince Nikolai.

King Abdullah II of Jordan was born on Jan. 30, 1962. In 1993, he married now-Queen Rania, the mother of his four children. In 1999, he succeeded his father, King Hussein, as his country's constitutional monarch.

Prince Hashem of Jordan (bottom right) shares a birthday with his father, King Abdullah II. Hashem — the fourth and youngest child of Abdullah and Queen Rania — was born on Jan. 30, 2005, and is second in line to the throne behind brother Crown Prince Hussein.

Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands — who was Queen Beatrix from 1980 until her 2013 abdication in favor of her son, who's now King Willem-Alexander — was born on Jan. 31, 1938.
