Whoopi Goldberg sparked a firestorm of controversy on "The View" last week when she falsely declared that the Holocaust was "not about race." A few hours later, she went on Stephen Colbert's late night show and attempted to explain her statement. Then, on Feb. 1, Whoopi apologized on "The View" and admitted her wrongdoing. Still, ABC News executives decided to discipline the comedian for her comments. On Tuesday evening, ABC announced that Whoopi would be suspended for two weeks effective immediately. Whoopi's comments prompted condemnation from many in the public eye, particularly those with right-leaning political viewpoints.

"Whoopi attacks me on a regular basis, she says stupid s*** on a regular basis, it just so happened to coincide. Whoopi Goldberg, who, by the way, I hope is still a friend — we can disagree with each other — should not be canceled or put off her show, as much as I totally disagree with her crazy statement — free speech! She should be there! She shouldn't get a timeout! That's the problem in America. There is just one view, one true opinion. And everyone else can go sit in the corner. Can we just understand that part of our sorry racial history in this country is that the point of view from a Black person is often going to be very different and sometimes shocking to a White person?… They are going to sometimes have a very different opinion. And the answer is not to make them sit in a corner for two weeks. That is insulting, so insulting, to make a 65-year-old — I mean, the person at ABC News said, 'I've asked her to take time to reflect and learn about the impact of her comments.' Reflect. How insulting for someone of her age, who is a sophisticated person. 'And the impact of our company' – There is no impact! There aren't neo-Nazis waiting for the green light from the lady on 'The View' to go out and do a new Kristallnacht." –Bill Maher on "Real Time With Bill Maher"

"Two weeks to slow the double standards," Gina Carano tweeted. On Feb. 2, she added, "I want to send blessings & love out to the Jewish community. When I was being smeared, cancelled & misunderstood, it was a Jewish man @benshapiro who reached out & asked if I'd like to talk about it. Maybe @WhoopiGoldberg could talk to Ben. Conversation over cancellation."

"I was lectured to thousands of times on 'The View,' there is a belief that 'cancel culture' is really 'accountability culture' among the woke left. Which seems to be a belief that's quickly forgotten whenever it's Whoopi who has to be held to account," Meghan McCain wrote in her DailyMail.com column, also calling the comments "bizarre, incoherent, and even dangerous." "I am not calling for Whoopi Goldberg to be fired, if only because I don't believe there is any universe where she could possibly do anything that could get her fired – she is the crown jewel of 'The View' and a pop culture icon… I also think ABC and 'The View' at large need to take a hard look at why some hosts — and let me be completely candid here — why some liberal hosts are held to an entirely different standard than anyone else."

"I don't believe there was any malice or she spoke from a place of malice, but sometimes we say things in the heat of the moment that we may not be informed fully about and what happens happens. As long as a person can acknowledge that and admit if they did wrong and apologize for that wrong, I think that's fine." –Anthony Anderson to TMZ

"I know Whoopi. She's not anti-Semitic. She chose 'Goldberg' for her last name for a stage name. She gave a really fulsome and sincere apology. I think what she said wasn't quite what she meant… I was very taken with how sincere and wholesome the apology was." –Al Franken on CNN Newsroom

"The media mob is outraged over Whoopi Goldberg's suspension from 'The View.' These are the same people who attempt to censor and silence anyone they disagree with. Talk about hypocrisy!" –Sean Hannity

"@WhoopiGoldberg You deeply hurt &offended me. By minimizing the horror of the Holocaust, the systematic annihilating of 6 MILLION Jews-which by the way IS a race-an attempted GENOCIDE to white on white crime? You 'All Lives Matter,' -ed us. Devastating & dangerous," Debra Messing tweeted, later adding, "To say the Holocaust was not about RACE is factually wrong. The Nazis believed Jews were 'an inferior race'-rats-and needed to be exterminated so there could rise a pure race."

"I'm Jewish but when I first heard my Jewishness was a race it was from a Nazi trying to diminish Jews. And it confused me. I believe Whoopi didn't understand the context. Neither had I." –Patricia Arquette

"Why is it that Rosanne (a Jewish woman) gets canceled for off color remarks but Whoopi's gets a total pass for antisemitism and downplaying the Holocaust? I can't help but notice that only people on the right face consequences for their mistakes." –Donald Trump Jr.

"What Whoopi Goldberg said was far worse than anything Joe Rogan said – will celebrities be boycotting The View or do woke stars get a pass?" Piers Morgan tweeted. "Sharon Osbourne was fired from The Talk for defending me against a fake charge of racism. Whoopi Goldberg said on The View yesterday that the Holocaust 'wasn't about race', which for Jewish people is about as racist a comment as anyone could make. Bet she doesn't lose her job."
