Madonna's brother says she can be 'horrifying'

In his 2008 tell-all "Life With My Sister Madonna," Christopher Ciccone, who worked as the singer's backstage dresser and show designer for years, skewers his famous sibling for being "rigid," nasty and treating him unfairly on the job. Speaking to the New York Post this week, though, Christopher claimed he could have written worse things about Madonna than he did. "I could have written that book, the book about how horrifying she is or can be, but I didn't write that book. I was just looking for a little recognition for the work I've done for 20 years with her, that it wasn't one person," he said. Christopher also accused his sister of turning the music industry against him. "When I got back to LA my 500 acquaintances suddenly turned out to be four friends," he said. "She's quite powerful in Los Angeles, in the industry. I was working in the industry doing music videos and tours and it was difficult to get work, if not impossible." Despite their falling out, he noted that they are on better terms today. "We've gotten past that, we talk," Christopher said. "I just talked to her a couple of weeks ago when I was at my father's vineyard. We email each other. Well, it's passed for me, but I do know Madonna likes to hold grudges. There's nothing I can do about that."

Kate Beckinsale brought her daughter Lily Sheen to "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" on Tuesday, Aug. 2, and proceeded to prove there's no embarrassment quite like that bestowed on a teenage daughter by her mother. As Kate and Jimmy nodded at Kate's 18-year-old daughter Lily Sheen in the front row of the audience, Kate helpfully asked, "You know how they have crushes on Justin Bieber and things like that?" before announcing, "She's got one on you," (via Us Weekly). Kate then pointed out the irony of the fact that Kate's father is Michael Sheen, aka the current boyfriend of Sarah Silverman, whom Jimmy was involved with years before he married Molly McNearny in 2013. "It's a little bit of a tricky situation, because my daughter's dad is dating Jimmy's ex-girlfriend— it's very twisted," she told the audience. "It's a sort of horrible, Human Centipede-y vibe." Kate wrapped up things up by telling Jimmy he "should be pleased" because "she's very attractive," before warning him, "She's out of your league! I just want you to know that." Speaking to Lily, Jimmy offered an apology, but suggested Lily continue fawning over him, "I'm sorry! I had nothing to do with this! This is all her! This is your mother!" he said. "Let's not ruin the crush thing. I want to keep that going, OK? Thank you very much. I appreciate it. I'm flattered. [Now] we're both embarrassed." Finally, he asked Kate, "When you were your daughter's age, did you have a crush on a middle-aged, out-of-shape, hairy talk show host?" Kate laughed. "I do think it's a phase, the not conventionally-attractive man phase. Not that that's your category! You know what I mean!" she squealed. "I didn't really have a type, so I sort of veered from Adam Ant into Boris Becker, and then that really scary looking one from The Pogues that had no teeth for a minute … Shane MacGowan!"

Which surname will Prince George use when he starts school in the fall?

Some folks have to decide whether to introduce their son by hi first name or nickname when he first starts school. Prince William and Duchess Kate have a different quandary when it comes to 4-year-old Prince George. According to the Daily Mail, royal watchers are trying to figure out which surname George will use in the school register this fall. Since "His Royal Highness" is an awkward way to list a kid in a school directory, George will likely end up using either Cambridge, which his father uses now, Wales, which his dad and uncle Harry used during their time in school or Mountbatten-Windsor. As the royal family's website explains: "For the most part, members of the Royal Family who are entitled to the style and dignity of HRH Prince or Princess do not need a surname, but if at any time any of them do need a surname (such as upon marriage), that surname is Mountbatten-Windsor." Prince George is set to attend Thomas' Battersea School in London next month.

Justin Bieber unlikely to face criminal charges in paparazzo accident

Police are not recommending criminal charges be brought against Justin Bieber for accidentally hitting a paparazzo with his truck as he backed out of a parking space last week. Sources tell TMZ police remain confident Bieber, who was being swarmed by flashing cameras at the time and had difficulty seeing the man who was standing in the street trying to take his picture, was not in the wrong and did not intend to hit the photographer. Biebs also had the right of way, according to TMZ, which may weaken a civil case if the photographer brings one against Justin. The pap was treated at a hospital for a leg injury after the accident.

Last year, Selena Gomez spent three months taking stock of her mental and emotional health and getting therapy for lupus side effects like anxiety, depression and panic attacks. As she explains in the new issue of InStyle, that work is still paying off. "It's so weird, how one year can change everything," she muses. "Last year I canceled my tour and went away for 90 days, and it was the best thing that I ever could've done. I had no phone, nothing, and I was scared. But it was amazing, and I learned a lot. Everything I cared about, I stopped caring about. I came out, and it felt like, 'OK, I can only go forward.' And there are still days. I go to therapy. I believe in that and talking about where you are. But I'm in a really, really healthy place." That may be why she's still enjoying a strong relationship with The Weeknd, whom she started dating in 2016. "I don't depend on one area of my life to make me happy," she says. "It's really important for me to love and nourish my friends and family and to make sure that I never get influenced by a guy. I've wanted to be in a strong head space for years, and I really wasn't. Before, I was so young and easily influenced, and I'd feel insecure. You want someone to add to your life, not to complete you, if that makes sense. I'm lucky because he's more of a best friend than anything else."

Lena Dunham calls out American Airlines flight attendants for transphobia

While waiting for a delayed flight in New York City this week, Lena Dunham caught a pair of flight attendants saying negative things about trans children and transgender people in general. She voiced her concern on Twitter — and was happy to get a response from the airline and a promise that American would "review" the situation. "Not gonna call out the airline who delayed cuz s— happens BUT I did just overhear 2 @AmericanAir attendants having a transphobic talk," she tweeted. "At this moment in history we should be teaching our employees about love and inclusivity @AmericanAir. That was worst part of this night." Later, she posted the exchange she had with someone from the airline who asked for specifics about where she was when the comments were made and promised to look into what had happened. "For those who followed my airport saga yesterday, here's my takeaway: these days it's the little things. A smile. Offering a seat. Respect," she tweeted. "We can't afford to treat each other like cattle when we have a government that does. Being trapped at the airport filled me with love!"

Dave Chappelle is still trying to explain a comment he made when he hosted "Saturday Night Live" the weekend after the election. "I'm wishing Donald Trump luck," Dave said in November (via E! News). "And I'm going to give him a chance. And we — the historically disenfranchised — demand that he give us one, too." This week on "The Late Show," Stephen Colbert wondered aloud if Dave was still able to regard the president with the kind of optimism he displayed on "SNL" (even though Dave later told Willie Geist on MSNBC that he'd "f—– up" with his comment.) "It's not like I wanted to give him a chance that night," Dave assured the host. "Listen, man: In the last six months, I think we're all getting an education about the presidency. I don't know that I've ever heard just in popular discourse people discussing ethics this much, and I didn't even realize how ethics was supposed to work at that level of government. And he's putting all this stuff at the forefront." Stephen chimed in, "Well, nobody really talks about oxygen until someone's got their hands around your throat." Dave agreed, then continued. "I contextualized, because I feel like a lot of white Americans finally got to see what an election night looks like for many black Americans every cycle. The shock of it was just like, 'Come on, man. Come on,'" he explained. "This is how traction works. I think it speaks to how effective [Barack Obama]'s presidency was. Donald Trump is the other foot. Good foot, bad foot, good foot, bad foot. I think we're making moves. I think he's going to make a more informed and better voter. We'll figure it out. We'll work it out. He is a polarizing dude. He's like a bad DJ at a good party."

Oprah Winfrey's weight loss goals focus on her health, not her size

In 2017, consumers want help "eating clean" and getting "healthy," not "losing weight" and "dieting." That's the revelation Weight Watchers made around the time Oprah Winfrey bought a ten percent stake in the company and began helping it become profitable again, according to a recent feature in New York Times Magazine. "For your heart to pump, pump, pump, pump, it needs the least amount of weight possible to do that. I can't accept myself if I'm over 200 pounds, because it's too much work on my heart," Oprah explained, sharing her own experience using Weight Watchers. Being overweight, she continued, "causes high blood pressure for me. It puts me at risk for diabetes, because I have diabetes in my family." Describing the system in the same "healthy" and "clean" terminology the Times describes being popular these days, Oprah explained how Weight Watchers no longer feels like a diet. "It's a mechanism to keep myself on track that brings a level of consciousness and awareness to my eating," she said. "It actually is, for me, mindful eating, because the points are so ingrained now."

Derick Dillard accused of bullying transgender teen

Jill Duggar Dillard's husband Derick Dillard is catching heat for a comment he made on twitter about Jazz Jennings, the 16-year-old star of "I Am Jazz," TLC's reality show about a teenager transitioning from male to female after being diagnosed at age 4 with gender identity disorder. When the network, which also hosts Derick's "Counting On" program, promoted the new season of "I Am Jazz," Derick responded with this tweet: "What an oxymoron… a 'reality' show which follows a non-reality. 'Transgender' is a myth. Gender is not fluid; it's ordained by God." The 28-year-old was quickly lambasted for the tweet. "Is it necessary for a grown man to throw shade at a teenage girl?" asked one user (via the Daily Mail). "I want to be clear. I have nothing against him. I only have issue with the words and definitions being propagated here," Derick responded. His attempt at self-defense did little to stop the tide of appalled responses. "Very hypocritical of your family to profit from a network which airs content against your beliefs. Don't like it? Don't associate with it," wrote another Twitter user. Some tweets pointed to the fact that Josh Duggar, Derick's brother-in-law, molested five underage girls, including his sisters, as a teenager. Others took aim at TLC, urging network execs to take action. "ARE YOU SERIOUSLY OK WITH THIS???" asked another user. "YOU'RE GONNA ALLOW A GROWN MAN CHILD TO BULLY A CHILD ON YOUR WATCH???" As of Thursday morning, neither Jazz nor TLC had commented.
