Another week, another batch of romance updates! In a huge break from royal tradition, Prince Harry's fiancée Meghan Markle will spend Christmas Day with her soon-to-be groom and future in-laws — including Queen Elizabeth II — at Sandringham, the monarch's estate. Kensington Palace released the headline-making news on Dec. 12. It makes Meghan the first unmarried partner to have Christmas lunch with the queen. Though Duchess Kate and Prince William were already engaged back in December 2010, Kate had to wait another year and couldn't attend until she was William's wife. Prince Charles's wives, Princess Diana and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, also were not invited to attend until they had married into the family. According to The Daily Mail columnist Richard Kay, the move "represents a sea change in the Victorian attitudes which for so long have colored the royal approach to modern life." Earlier in the week, he also reported, Meghan was invited to join Harry, the queen and other royals for a big though non-public event: the Royal Household Christmas party at Windsor Castle (where they'll have their wedding reception in May). There, she spent more than an hour meeting and chatting with the footmen, housemaids, butlers, pages, domestic staff and gardeners who work at the royal residences. "She asked everyone she met their names and what they did," a guest told the columnist, who also shared that Meghan revealed she and Harry had spent the previous weekend at Windsor "looking over the state rooms as they began making plans for the wedding."
