On Aug. 1, 2023, former President Donald Trump was indicted by a federal grand jury for efforts to overturn the 2020 election — which culminated in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol as Congress met to validate President Joe Biden's victory. The four charges are conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights. On Thursday, Aug. 3, the former POTUS pleaded not guilty in a Washington, D.C., federal courthouse. This marks Trump's third indictment since March 2023. Still, he remains the front-runner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination — and by a wide margin!
After the indictment news broke, several notable names in entertainment — on both sides of the aisle — sounded off on social media.

"This is a very sad day for America and it was also very sad driving through Washington, D.C., and seeing the filth and the decay and all of the broken buildings and walls and the graffiti. This is not the place that I left. It's a very sad thing to see it. When you look at what's happening, this is a persecution of a political opponent. This was never supposed to happen in America. This is the persecution of the person that's leading by very, very substantial numbers in the Republican primary and leading Biden by a lot, so if you can't beat him, you persecute him or you prosecute him. We can't let this happen in America," Donald Trump told reporters after his arraignment in a federal courthouse in the national's capital on Aug. 3, 2023

"As President, I will end the weaponization of government, replace the FBI Director, and ensure a single standard of justice for all Americans. While I've seen reports, I have not read the indictment. I do, though, believe we need to enact reforms so that Americans have the right to remove cases from Washington, DC to their home districts. Washington, DC is a 'swamp' and it is unfair to have to stand trial before a jury that is reflective of the swamp mentality. One of the reasons our country is in decline is the politicization of the rule of law. No more excuses — I will end the weaponization of the federal government." —Florida Governor and Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis

"Hi Trump supporters, I know many of you are still dismissing January 6th as a voter fraud protest that got out of hand. But the indictment makes clear, that was just a small part of the former president's plans behind the scenes. He was attempting a coup. Read the indictment." —Jon Cryer

"Anyone else noticing a pattern here? The corrupt beurocrats [sic] of the Biden regime charge Trump literally the day after every single disastrous Biden crime family story. Rather than looking into the millions sent to the Biden's their kids and their grandkids from virtually all of our enemies they go after their political enemies knowing that their lackeys in the media will use their bogus charges to cover for Joe Biden, the most corrupt president in the history of our nation. There's no such thing as this much coincidence and if you've been paying attention, you will realize that we have become a banana republic. Truly disgusting." –Donald Trump Jr.

"Another Day Another Trump Indictment!!! I'm celebrating in NYC," Michael Rapaport wrote on X, formerly Twitter, alongside a brief portion of a video he shared on YouTube in which he reacts to Donald Trump's latest indictment. In the clip, the actor says, "Let's be clear — this was not just wacky, far-left people. This was in Republican-ran states. … They all told you no. Fifty times you went to court with your election fraud — there's not one piece of evidence to prove that there's been any substantial voter fraud. You're still talking about the fact that you won the election — you're out of your f****** mind!"

"I hear that Deranged Jack Smith, in order to interfere with the Presidential Election of 2024, will be putting out yet another Fake Indictment of your favorite President, me, at 5:00 P.M. Why didn't they do this 2.5 years ago? Why did they wait so long? Because they wanted to put it right in the middle of my campaign. Prosecutorial Misconduct!" –former President Donald Trump on Aug. 1, 2023 — the day he was indicted for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election

"We've recently learned: • Hunter received money from China (contradicting President Biden's claim) • President Biden spoke with Hunter's business associates over 20 times (contradicting what Biden previously claimed) • Biden's DOJ tried to secretly give Hunter broad immunity and admitted the sweetheart deal was unprecedented And just yesterday a new poll showed President Trump is without a doubt Biden's leading political opponent. Everyone in America could see what was going to come next: DOJ's attempt to distract from the news and attack the frontrunner for the Republican nomination, President Trump. House Republicans will continue to uncover the truth about Biden Inc. and the two-tiered system of justice." –House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA)

"The insurrection on January 6, 2021 was one of the saddest and most infamous days in American history, personally orchestrated by Donald Trump and fueled by his insidious Big Lie in an attempt to undermine the 2020 election. In a deadly effort to overturn the will of the American people and block the peaceful transition of power, our nation's Capitol—the very symbol and home of American patriotism and democracy—fell under attack to thousands of vicious and violent rioters.
"The third indictment of Mr. Trump illustrates in shocking detail that the violence of that day was the culmination of a months-long criminal plot led by the former president to defy democracy and overturn the will of the American people. This indictment is the most serious and most consequential thus far and will stand as a stark reminder to generations of Americans that no one, including a president of the United States, is above the law. The legal process must continue to move forward without any outside interference." –Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) in a joint statement
