Anne Heche, the Emmy-winning actress who rose to fame in the '90s in films like "Six Days Seven Nights" and "Donnie Brasco," passed away on Friday, Aug. 12, from injuries she sustained in a car accident. She was 53. Her death wasn't unexpected, as the actress's rep previously said Anne wasn't expected to survive. TMZ reported that Anne was "brain dead," noting that under California law, that is the definition of death, but noted that machines were keeping Anne's heart beating for the purpose of preserving her organs for donation. She is survived by two sons, Atlas Heche Tupper, 13, and Homer Laffoon, 20. Following Anne's death, many in the entertainment world reacted with sadness.

"My brother Atlas and I lost our mom. After six days of almost unbelievable emotional swings, I am left with a deep, wordless sadness. Hopefully my mom is free from pain and beginning to explore what I like to imagine as her eternal freedom. Over those six days, thousands of friends, family, and fans made their hearts known to me. I am grateful for their love, as I am for the support of my Dad, Coley, and my stepmom Alexi, who continue to be my rock during this time. Rest In Peace Mom, I love you." –Anne Heche's son, Homer Laffoon

"Anne, we had only just met but I do know that you were very loved by our mutual friends and management team, and for this, I also loved you and saw all the magic in you… I saw your heart too and I know you were a renegade in Hollyhood and that's pretty rad to maintain in this business. I saw you and and some similarties in our upbringings as well. Though you were a freakin wild child and I wanted to bottle your energy, I know how truly authentic and sincere to who you are was. I agree about your intelligence and how you carved your own lane but now you are free from the chains that bind us here on earth. Go be that free spirit, fairy princess I saw in you. Maybe for now you are actually the lucky one. I do know there are and will be lots of heavy hearts left here behind, in purgatory (aka planet earth as we know it now) praying for you to soar to the highest mount, straight into that light. Pray for us down here too! You're an awesome lady! You will be missed!" –Taryn Manning

"I've been thinking of her since her accident last week and like many of you, my heart is heavy… Anne was one of the stars on @dancingwiththestars that truly touched my heart. Her personal story was one that reached into my heart and squeezed it. I could feel the pain she felt, and I could also feel her resilient and courageous soul. And it was touching.I had no idea all that she had gone through in this lifetime and I felt a connection to her and the struggles she faced in life. Despite her trials and tribulations, she had a bright light when she came out on that stage to dance. Every time she performed, there was a sense of complete joy and a celebration of life. It was pure. And it was special… I am so heart broken for her and for those who love her. It is a tragedy in the fullest sense of the word. Not only for her but for the people who were also hurt and lost things in this incident. Lives are changed forever. In an instant…" –Carrie Ann Inaba

"Anne Heche has died. I'm thinking about James Tupper & their son Atlas. The couple were trapped in a bitter custody dispute which likely contributed to her instability & impacted her mental health. Family Law provides little relief for couples trapped in that system." –Greg Ellis
