On Jan. 6, 2019, award season kicks off with the 76th Annual Golden Globes, which will honor the best in TV and film. While we're dying to see who wins, we're also excited to see the celebrity fashion. In honor of the big event, Wonderwall.com is taking a look back at the styles worn by the biggest stars 30 years ago at the 1989 Golden Globes… starting with Tom Hanks and his wife, Rita Wilson. The couple, who'd just married the year before, arrived at the Beverly Hills award ceremony looking radiant. Tom, who was nominated that night (and won!) for his performance in the comedy "Big," chose a double-breasted black tuxedo with a white bow tie while Rita glammed it up in a beaded black cocktail dress with an extra-poofy skirt lined in ruffled satin trim. Meryl Streep's glittery dress suit at the 1989 Golden Globes featured hallmark '80s trends like three-quarter-length sleeves, shoulder pads, bold black buttons, matching gloves and, of course, chunky gold jewelry to match. Meryl was nominated that night for best performance by an actress in a drama for her film "A Cry in the Dark."

Longtime friends Clint Eastwood and Doris Day showed off their statues at the 1989 Golden Globes. Clint, who wore a classic black tuxedo, won the Globe for directing the biographical drama "Bird" and Doris, who donned an all-white pantsuit with a frilly blouse adorned with ruffled satin ribbons and a giant floral broach, was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille award for a lifetime of contributions to the world of entertainment.

Jodie Foster kept her look simple and sleek for the 1989 Golden Globes. The actress, who won the award for best actress in a drama for her work in "The Accused" that year, wore a velvet little black dress with a delicate pearl cuff and matching pearl earrings. We loved her choice of a classic red lip and neatly squared red fingernails.

"The Wonder Years" stars Alley Mills, Dan Lauria and Fred Savage showed off their award for best TV series at the 1989 Golden Globes. Alley shed her character's '70s-mom fashion in favor of a sparkling sleeveless black-and-gold ball gown with a gorgeously scalloped bust, while Dan and Fred went the traditional route in matching tuxedos.

Recognize this face? It's none other than Mayim Bialik at the 1989 Golden Globes, who hadn't yet landed her breakthrough role in the comedy series "Blossom." The 14-year-old actress wore an interesting peach tuxedo with tails and a sparkling rainbow cummerbund and matching tie. While we're not in love with her fashion for the night, we think her on-trend crimped hair was totally adorable.

Former couple Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon hit the 1989 Golden Globes looking chic and ready to party. Tim's single-breasted tuxedo was classic, but Susan's over-the-shoulder full-length fur coat amped up both their looks and gave them some immediate swagger. Perhaps Susan's nomination that night for best actress in a comedy for her performance in "Bull Durham" gave her that extra edge?

Sigourney Weaver took home the best actress in a drama trophy for her work in "Gorillas in the Mist" at the 1989 Golden Globes and looked powerful in a red single-sleeved gown with a thigh-high slit while doing it. The actress accentuated her winning look with a hammered gold cuff bracelet and shimmery gold earrings.

"A Fish Called Wanda" co-stars John Cleese and Jamie Lee Curtis arrived at the 1989 Golden Globes together. Both actors were nominated for their work in the film and although neither took home the statue, they still looked fierce. John kept his evening look playful with a colorful tie while Jamie went for the drama with this sleeveless blue velvet mermaid dress that showed off her killer curves.

"227" star Jackée Harry arrived at the 1989 Golden Globes looking like a green goddess. The voluptuous actress, who was nominated for an award that night for her work as Sandra on the series, wore a figure-hugging iridescent minidress with embellished, puffy shoulders and all kinds of sparkle. Jackée finished the look with oversized earrings (very '80s), flowing, loose hair and a gorgeous smile.

Longtime friends George Hamilton and Joan Collins — who co-hosted the 1989 Golden Globes — kicked their fashion up several notches for the night. While George shined in a satin-lapel double-breasted tuxedo, Joan invoked "Gone With the Wind" in this dazzling Bob Mackie gown. The off-the-shoulder ensemble featured a bosom-hugging bodice and a voluminous, sweeping skirt with decadent gold and white embroidery (which her drop earrings matched perfectly) that made her stand out as the belle of the award show ball.

Comedienne Tracey Ullman has never shied away from wild and wacky fashion moments and she didn't disappoint at the 1989 Golden Globes. Tracey, who was nominated for best performance in a comedy series that year, donned a peach and pink taffeta minidress with a flower-embellished neckline that made her look like a tropical cocktail. While her pointy-toed orange satin pumps weren't helping her look, we're amazed she was able to find them in a matching color. One thing we did love were Tracey's bouncy, frizz-free curls.

There are a lot of things we love about this picture of singer Phil Collins and his then-wife, Jill Tavelman, at the 1989 Golden Globes. First of all, they looked ridiculously happy together and second, Jill was seven months pregnant with their daughter, actress Lily Collins, who's now a star in her own right. Phil, who won an award that night for best original song for "Two Hearts," looked swanky in his tuxedo while Jill was absolutely glowing in her gray polka-dot maternity dress.

Presenter and nominee JoBeth Williams looked nothing like her "Poltergeist" character at the 1989 Golden Globes. Wearing a royal blue crepe gown with a lacy black bustier and shoulder-pad-enhanced navy blue bolero jacket, JoBeth proved she could work a little danger into her formal-event fashion.

We just want to take a moment to acknowledge "Cheers" star Shelley Long's enormous black-and-white ruffled sleeves at the 1989 Golden Globes. As she stood next to Globe winner Martin Landau (who wore a simple tux), Shelley's sleeves reminded us of cheerleader pom-poms and "Beetlejuice" which, somehow, totally works.

Actress Ann Jillian looked regal in this long-sleeved gown at the 1989 Golden Globes. Holding her award for best performance by an actress in a miniseries (for the made-for-TV film "The Ann Jillian Story"), this longtime Hollywood star glimmered in her red dress, which featured heavy gold embroidery and a delicately scalloped neckline.

Barbara Hershey went full-on mom at the 1989 Golden Globes. While son Tom Carradine opted for a classy fitted tuxedo, Barbara, who was nominated that night for best supporting actress in "The Last Temptation of Christ," went way low-key in an oversized, high-waisted black crushed-satin pantsuit. Although her look was nothing to brag about, she was clearly over the moon about having her handsome son by her side.

Brazilian-American actress Sonia Braga arrived at the 1989 Golden Globes looking like Aphrodite incarnate. Dressed in a curve-hugging white satin gown featuring a long wrap, Sonia — who was nominated for best supporting actress for her work in "Moon Over Parador" — had all eyes on her throughout the night.

"K-9" co-stars (and husband-and-wife team) Mel Harris and Cotter Smith looked like fire and ice at the 1989 Golden Globes. Mel kept it cool in an oversized, sheer-striped gown while Cotter heated things up in a sexy tuxedo and bow tie.

1989 was a big year for actress Melanie Griffith. Not only did she show off her enviable style in this off-the-shoulder evening gown with an open waist featuring layers of ruffled, flowing fabric, but she snagged the Golden Globe for best actress in a comedy for "Working Girl." Fun fact: Melanie also earned an Oscar nomination that year for the same role.

Four years before his untimely death, actor River Phoenix arrived at the 1989 Golden Globes as a nominee for best supporting actor for his work in "Running on Empty." Donning a pinstriped tuxedo and tinted eyewear, River, who had a reputation as a Hollywood bad boy, looked surprisingly sophisticated.

"Murphy Brown" star Candice Bergen took home the award for best performance in a TV comedy at the 1989 Golden Globes. The actress kept her look simple and classy with this sleeveless black evening gown (revealing her amazing arms) and chunky layered necklace.

Recognize this guy? If you thought it was Alec Baldwin, so did we! Alas, it's actually a young Steven Spielberg at the 1989 Golden Globes with his then-wife, actress Amy Irving. Steven, who wore a wide-lapel black tuxedo with a pleated dress shirt, came in support of Amy, who was nominated that night for best actress in a comedy film for "Crossing Delancey." We loved Amy's look, which included a satin camisole top, a matching flared knee-length skirt with a white-and-gold sash tied around her waist and an embroidered shrug with extra-thick shoulder pads. She even rocked a gorgeous gold and pearl choker before chokers became a fashion trend. Très chic!

"Rain Man" star Valeria Golino was all smiles at the 1989 Golden Globes. The Italian-Greek actress wore a two-toned minidress with a layered skirt and sheer blue organza sleeves. Keeping it ultra-'80s, she paired the dress with black pantyhose and a single diamond drop earring on her left ear.

Although "Newhart" star Mary Frann wasn't presenting or up for any awards at the 1989 Golden Globes, she did stand out amongst the crowd. In this elaborately detailed evening gown, Mary showed off all her best assets. The open decollete and heavily embroidered bodice gave way to a shimmering full-length skirt that was only topped by the blonde beauty's megawatt smile. We're not afraid to admit we actually love the shoulder pads and high collar on this dress.
