The American Music Awards returns on Nov. 22, 2020, on ABC for the show's 48th annual show. In honor of one of music's biggest nights, Wonderwall.com is going back 20 years to see how much the music scene and red carpet fashion have changed. Kicking off our fashion flashback are Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey, who were dating at the time. Nick, then a boybander in 98 Degrees, sauntered down the carpet in an ill-fitting pinstriped suit while Jessica stunned in a form-fitting sparkly pink dress that hit just above the ankle. Christina Aguilera mixed her outfit up, just a touch, when she got on stage to perform "I Turn To You" and "What a Girl Wants." The singer kept that unique blue top on but swapped her edgy pants for a Cinderella-esque floor-length skirt in an icy blue hue.
In January 2000, Mariah Carey took home the illustrious "Achievement Award" at the American Music Awards. The diva choose a slinky black silhouette for her big night with major cut-outs along her rib cage and décolletage.
Reba McEntire choose an icy blue dress for the 2000 AMAs at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The country singer's gown was elegant with its fitted bodice and touch of volume in the skirt.
Melissa Joan Hart favored a more casual ensemble at the 2000 AMAs. The "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" star wore mauve-colored pants with a laser-cut lace design and a strapless and sheer embellished top. But Melissa destroyed the elegance of the outfit with a poorly matched oversized leather jacket.
Spice Girls singer Melanie Chisholm, better known as Mel C, was in the midst of pursuing a solo career when the AMAs were held in early 2000. The British singer also known as Sporty Spice wore her hair blonde and spiky and paired a black halter top with a long black skirt. She added a couple bracelets and some pointy, strappy heels, which gave the look a bit of a witchy feel.
Queen Latifah went super-casual to this awards show. The actress and rapper wore a matching top and pants in a dull brown shade with some leather accents. She tied some cream-colored fabric around her waist that looked like a sweatshirt on a hot day. She bizarrely used a piece of the fabric as a headband too, but she looked more ready for a tennis match than a red carpet event.
Carmen Electra choose some bold colors for her walk down the red carpet in 2000. She donned a wildly printed purple-and-red frock with a ruffled, highly revealing neckline and poofy fabric covering her hands.
Christina Aguilera must taken some style inspiration from Lenny Kravitz, who wore near-identical pants at the 2000 AMAs. Lenny topped his leather snakeskin-print trousers with a red T-shirt and a fitted red leather jacket. To complete the look, Lenny also wore his trademark funky sunglasses.
Back in the days of boy bands — and their members' coordinating outfits – *NSYNC mostly went with an array of leather jackets a the 2000 AMAs. While Joey Fatone didn't get the memo, Lance Bass picked a caramel-colored coat while JC Chasez chose a gunmetal hue with a sportcoat cut. Chris Kirkpatrick arrived wearing silver leather and Justin Timberlake — in blue shades — went with a studded black jacket.
Enrique Iglesias, an AMA performer and nominee, walked the red carpet in blue pants with a matching buttoned jacket and a casual tee underneath. He made his way inside with actress Shannon Elizabeth on his arm. She wore a fitted off-the-shoulder black gown with mesh sleeves.
Deborah Cox wore a tight black dress that showed off her curves in 2000. The singer covered her bare shoulders with a crochet wrap that dragged down the elegance of the outfit.
Eve
Rapper Eve wore an array of pink shades to the American Music Awards in 2000 — pale pink pants with a sparkly belt topped with a two-tone top that showed off her signature paw-print tattoos. She finished the outfit with a pink faux fur jacket and a matching fedora.
Olivia Newton-John blended in with the red carpet at the 2000 AMAs. She wore a red flowing blouse with matching pants, creating an overall casual and unexciting look for a major awards show.
When Ginuwine was nominated for favorite soul/R&B male artist in 2000, he had then-girlfriend Sole on his arm. The singer choose a black-on-black look with a matching fedora and a prominent cross necklace. Sole also choose a single-shade look with her green tank top and matching skirt.
Performer and nominee Faith Evans made an interesting choice with her AMAs outfit. On top, she wore a shiny white button-down blouse and on the bottom, she wore a high-waisted sparkly skirt. The combination made for an odd match.
Melissa Etheridge posed for photos with then-partner Julie Cypher at the 2000 AMAs. The rocker wore a leather suit with square-toed boots while Julie went for a more glamorous look in a slinky pink halter-style gown with an emerald green jacket in hand.
Caroline Rhea was another celebrity who went for a leather look at the 2000 AMAs. The "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" actress wore a black bottom with matching black top and a leather jacket. She added a touch of flair to the outfit with a super-skinny maroon scarf around her neck.
Kelsey Grammer walked the red carpet in a black-on-black ensemble, letting then-wife Camille Grammer be the main attraction. The future "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star wore a silvery gray satin dress that paired well with her icy blonde hair.
Eminem performed at the 2000 AMAs in a classic outfit: The rapper didn't let an awards show dress code keep him from wearing a white tee and Nike cap.
Pamela Anderson attended the AMAs in a black dress with a plunging neckline. Ex-husband Tommy Lee — with whom she'd briefly reconciled — went with a more casual look in the form of a gray T-shirt and black zippered jacket.
"Frasier" star Jane Leeves shied away from the dark, wintery colors of the AMAs red carpet and brightened things up in a short yellow dress with sparkling embellishments throughout.
Andy Garcia posed for photos with Gloria Estefan, who won the American Music Award of Merit in 2000. Both went with safe award show options — a tux for the actor and a black velvet gown with a satin belt for the superstar singer.
"ER" actress Kellie Martin glowed in a green spaghetti-strap dress in 2000. Kellie's frock had some beautiful movement thanks to a wavy pattern throughout.
The ladies of Nobody's Angel — Alitzah Navarro, Stacey Harper, Amy Sue Hardy and Sarah Smith — coordinated their outfits for the 2000 AMAs. The singers wore shiny purple and orange fabric creations with pops of blue. Each member jazzed up her outfit with bold shoes and accessories, particularly in their hair.
Katie Wagner went for an ice-cold look at the January 2000 award show. The host donned a sparkly silver button-down top with a shiny skirt and tied the ensemble together with a super-wide blue belt.
Kristyn Osborn, Kelsi Osborn and Kassidy Osborn of SHeDaisy walked the AMAs red carpet wearing a fall color palette. Kristyn, left, wore brown snakeskin-print pants with a long brown leather jacket. Kassidy, center, wore a black outfit with a butterscotch-colored jacket. And Kelsi, right, wore a neutral skirt with a brown top and a dark faux-fur jacket.
