A witness aboard the flight named Andrew Springs took to X on Feb. 1, 2024, to detail exactly what happened: "A woman on my @southwest flight from Baltimore to Phoenix this morning had a mid-flight medical emergency. The doctor and nurse attending to her couldn't find a strong pulse, her blood pressure was extremely low, and required oxygen to breathe. It was genuinely scary," he wrote.

As the flight crew and passengers grew increasingly concerned, a man in an aisle seat asked, "Could it be her blood sugar?" The man then shared that he had a diabetic testing kit on him.
Andrew Springs, who's from Baltimore and appears to be a big Ravens fan based on his tweets, recognized the helpful man as Ravens tight end Mark Andrews.
"Andrews instructed the medical professionals (equal citizen heroes in this story) on using his test kit. Eventually her heart-rate stabilized," Andrew wrote on X.

As soon as the flight landed safely in Phoenix, paramedics rushed onto the plane.
"[Mark] Andrews deplaned quietly. No fanfare. As he has done his whole career, he stepped up in a huge moment when people needed him most," Andrew Springs wrote on X. "Watching complete strangers spring into action to help save someone's life is truly amazing."

As word of Mark Andrews' heroic actions spread, he released a brief statement via the Baltimore Ravens eschewing praise and bringing attention to other passengers' actions.
"In addition to the fast-acting flight attendants, the real heroes are the nurse and doctor who also happened to be on the plane. Thankfully they were able to provide the woman the quick assistance she needed," he said.
