Hunter Biden appeared on Capitol Hill on Dec. 13 where he told reporters he'd testify publicly in House Republicans' impeachment investigation into his father, President Joe Biden. The president's son said he would not, however, submit to the private deposition Republican lawmakers scheduled for that same morning, multiple outlets reported.
"I'm here to testify in a public hearing today to answer any of the committee's legitimate questions," Hunter said, according to ABC News, appearing to defy the House GOP's subpoena for his testimony behind closed doors.
Hunter, who is under federal indictment on tax and gun charges, said he's "made mistakes" but accused House Republicans of seeking to "dehumanize" him in order to "embarrass and damage" his father, CNN reported.
"For six years, I have been the target of the unrelenting Trump attack machine shouting 'Where's Hunter?' Well, here is my answer, I am here," Hunter said.
"In the depths of my addiction, I was extremely irresponsible with my finances. But to suggest that is grounds for an impeachment inquiry is beyond the absurd. It's shameless," he continued. "There is no evidence to support the allegations that my father was financially involved in my business because it did not happen."

The Dec. 13 news conference marked Hunter Biden's first public comments since he was indicted on Dec. 7 on three felony and six misdemeanor charges stemming from $1.4 million in taxes he failed to pay to California between 2016 and 2019. He has since paid that sum.
The indictment does not claim President Joe Biden had any involvement in Hunter's alleged tax evasion scheme. And as of Dec. 13, House Republicans had yet to offer any proof of their claims the president had any ties to his son's foreign business dealings.
Speaking to press on Capitol Hill on Dec. 13, Hunter added, "Republicans do not want an open process where Americans can see their tactics, expose their baseless inquiry, or hear what I have to say. What are they afraid of? I am here."

The latest allegations against Hunter Biden fueled much of Jimmy Kimmel's monologue on Dec. 11. The late night host took aim at the indictment's claim that while allegedly dodging tax payments, Hunter spent millions on "drugs, escorts and girlfriends, luxury hotels and rental properties, exotic cars, clothing and other items of a personal nature, in short, everything but his taxes."
Given Hunter's alleged level of luxury spending, Jimmy quipped he's "like the son Donald Trump never had."
The late night host added, "$188,000 on adult entertainment and a little over $71,000 on rehab and re-rehab and re-rehab for a grand total of almost $5 million, which is, I mean, that's like an early 2000s Charlie Sheen-caliber performance. It's impressive."
Before moving on, Jimmy threw one more punch: "The White House has reiterated … that President Biden will not pardon Hunter if he is convicted of any crime. Although they didn't say anything about not dressing him up as a turkey next Thanksgiving and pardoning him then."

"This is an investigation about public corruption at the highest levels… We expect to depose the president's son and then we'll be more than happy to have a public hearing with him," House Oversight Committee Chair and Rep. James Comer (center) told reporters on Dec. 13.
Comer, along with Rep. Jim Jordan (left), threatened to hold Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress for defying a subpoena for his closed-door testimony on Dec. 13. Jordan previously ignored a subpoena himself when he was called to testify about the Jan. 6 insurrection.
The two Republicans are leading the investigation.
