Nichelle Nichols, the trailblazing actress known primarily for starring as Lieutenant Uhura on TV's "Star Trek," died on July 30, 2022, her family announced in a statement. She was 89. "Last night, my mother, Nichelle Nichols, succumbed to natural causes and passed away," her son, Kyle Johnson, said on Facebook. "Her light however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and draw inspiration." Following her passing, several Hollywood heavyweights and former "Star Trek" colleagues honored her online.
