In honor of this year's AMAs on Nov. 21, 2021, Wonderwall.com is looking back at the fashion from 2001. Starting with Mandy Moore, a teenaged pop star at the time, who was all smiles in a fluttery purple gown with velvet flower detailing at the 2001 AMAs show. She styled the look with voluminous hair, silver heeled sandals and pink makeup.

Nominee and performer Jessica Simpson turned heads in her all-red outfit complete with a pleather bustier, matching pants and a long jacket with flower detailing along the hem.

Before Jennifer Lopez performed "Love Don't Cost a Thing" on the 2001 AMAs telecast, she posed for photos in a short white wrap dress tightly cinched at the waist. She made the outfit uniquely J.Lo-y with her oversized white floppy hat.

Can you believe it's been 20 years since this iconic photo of Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears was taken?! That era's prince and princess of pop made fashion history at the 2001 American Music Awards. This iconic look was born that night: the all-denim ensembles rocked by Brit and JT. The two spared no denim expense, with the boybander even donning a matching fedora and the "I'm a Slave 4 U" singer carrying a jean purse. They couldn't have looked more, er, in sync.
Nominee and performer Pink was the picture of edginess in 2001 with her signature short pink hair, shiny graffiti-covered overalls and black bralette.
Before Pink headed into the AMAs and changed outfits, she walked the red carpet in military fatigue-style pants with black boots and a leather halter with "ENVY" etched across it.
Kelly Rowland, Beyonce Knowles and Michelle Williams wore what must have been signature Tina Knowles matching ensembles — a classic look from the era with all three ladies in the same print sewn into outfits uniquely tailored to their individual style — when they won the AMA for favorite soul/R&B band/duo/group.
Country music queen Faith Hill was the big winner at the 2001 AMAs with four nominations and three victories. She headed into the award show in a white button-down blouse paired with heavily embellished camel-colored pants with a silver belly dancer belt.
Daryl Hannah's AMAs outfit had all the ingredients of "rocker chic" — a one-shouldered graphic tee, a leather skirt, boots, countless bracelets and a pink streak in her hair — but the look fell flat on the then-40-year-old actress.
Tina Atikns-Campbell and Erica Atkins of Mary Mary matched in burnt orange looks the night they were nominated for favorite soul/R&B new artist back in January 2001.
Once inside the AMAs, Jessica Simpson changed into a mega-sequined two-piece outfit with low-rise bellbottom pants and a long-sleeved button-down crop top.
Teenaged country music star LeAnn Rimes looked icy cool in a pearl suit with an embellished white top underneath and her hair pulled back, giving her outfit a severe feel.
Vitamin C made two interesting fashion choices at the 2001 music award show, which was held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The singer opted for a glittery sleeveless Playboy-logo crop top that she paired with a pair of shimmery disco pants.
A very blonde Tiffani Thiessen kept it casual in a sleeveless white top with a plunging neckline and low-slung printed green pants.
Carmen Electra looked red-hot in a maroon and black animal-print halter minidress paired with matching maroon boots. Her high ponytail and deep tan completed the look.
Singer Mya stepped on to the red carpet in a shimmery black halter dress. She accessorized with black-and-white strappy heels and a matching black-and-white textured wrap.
Country music star Martina McBride, who attended the event as a performer and a nominee, looked like a million bucks in a timeless metallic tank gown.
Toni Braxton took home two soul/R&B awards in a sleek white suit with a delicate shell underneath.
Brooke Shields looked like a suburban mom having a night on the town when she exited her limo at the 2001 AMAs. The actress wore a sparkling black halter-style top and black dress pants, keeping it pretty casual for a Hollywood award show.
Winner Janet Jackson was another star who opted for a white suit at the AMAs on Jan. 8, 2001. Hers featured wide-legged trousers, a longer jacket and a matching shell underneath. She added a glitzy silver statement necklace for some much needed flair.
Jaime Pressly made some very of-the-era choices when she got dressed for the 2001 AMAs. The actress wore a flimsy low-rise gold skirt, matching boots and a tied-up button-down blouse in a sheer animal-print fabric.
Laura Prepon was unrecognizable at the 2001 AMAs in this dress, which felt very "wedding guest." The "That '70s Show" actress paired the frock with black heels and a black purse; it was only her choker necklace which made the look a little more interesting.
Kelly Price attended the 28th Annual American Music Awards in a maroon leather outfit that matched her hair perfectly. The R&B nominee's dress featured beading up the bodice and a matching bolero jacket. She leaned so hard into the color theme that even her sunglasses matched!
