And award season is officially underway! The Golden Globe Awards are usually the booziest night in Hollywood, and this one — hosted by Jimmy Fallon from the Beverly Hills hotel — should be no different. But aside from the actual awards, of course, what had everyone talking? From red carpet trends and viral moments to emotional speeches, awkward encounters and more, check out what people were buzzing about at 74th Golden Globes on Jan. 8, 2017… Let's start with the guy who's simply the best: Ryan Gosling made jaws drop and tears fall. After winning the best actor Golden Globe for his performance in "La La Land," the dreamy star took the stage and began his speech with a joke, quipping that it wasn't the first time he'd been mistaken for Ryan Reynolds. Then The Gos got uncharacteristically personal and opened up about longtime love Eva Mendes without ever uttering her name. "I would just like to try and thank one person properly and say that while I was singing and dancing and playing piano and having one of the best experiences I've ever had on a film, my lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second and trying to help her brother fight his battle with cancer," Ryan said on stage. "If she hadn't of taken all that on so that I could have this experience, it would surely be someone else up here other than me today so sweetheart, thank you. To my daughters Amada and Esmeralda, I love you. And if I may, I'd like to dedicate this to the memory of her brother Juan Carlos Mendes."

Rousing speech

It's Meryl Streep's world, we're just living in it. When the film legend accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement, she got emotional, but it seemed to have little to do with the honor itself and more to do with the state of the world. The beloved actress, who'd lost her voice and struggled to get the words out at points, took the opportunity to get political, surprising many. Without mentioning his name, she skewered President-elect Donald Trump for making fun of a handicapped reporter. "It wasn't a movie, it was real life," said the acting legend, adding that "violence incites violence." During her well-received speech, she also praised Hollywood stars, saying they're "outsiders and foreigners." "If you kick us out you'll have nothing to watch except football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts," she quipped. Finally, she also praised the press, another target of Trump's. "We need the principle press to call him into account for every outrage," she said, encouraging everyone to support and stay committed to protecting journalists going forward. "As my friend, the late great Princess Leia said to me once, 'take your broken heart and make it into art.'"

A good laugh

Get Goldie Hawn her glasses! The actress took the stage with Amy Schumer, her co-star in the upcoming comedy "Snatched," to present the award for best actor in a musical or comedy. Goldie hilariously and repeatedly misread the words on the teleprompter, saying "mystical" instead of "musical" and "tainted" instead of "talented." "You're nailing it," Amy told her before turning to Goldie's longtime love Kurt Russell, who was sitting in the audience. "Kurt, do you have her glasses?" It might have been a bit, but it was still funny.

Cringe-worthy moment

Rule No. 1: If you're going to interview a celebrity about their movie, know the name of their movie. Jenna Bush Hager committed a massive faux pas while chatting with Pharrell Williams, who's nominated for Best Original Score for "Hidden Figures." "You're nominated for 'Hidden Fences,'" Jenna said. Pharrell was a good sport, averting his eyes, looking down and trying not to make a scene. Naturally, Twitter wasn't kind to Jenna. "Someone ask Jenna Bush what 'Hidden Fences' is?" wrote one commenter. Another tweeted, "I guess all black movies look the same to her." Jenna, Jenna, Jenna…

Her lucky number

What a different 13 years makes! After taking the stage, Emma Stone revealed she moved to Los Angeles 13 years ago this very week as a hopeful actress. On Sunday, she took home the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for her work in "La La Land." "This is a film for dreamers and I think that hope and creativity are two of the most important things in the world," she said. She thanked the usual suspects (director, co-stars, producers, etc.) and shared the award with people who have failed but "find it in themselves to get up and keep moving forward."

Team Brad?

Did Hollywood just tip its hand and show its support for Brad Pitt in his divorce from Angelina Jolie? Brad came out on stage to introduce "Moonlight" (his company, Plan B, produced it) and the crowd roared. Like, really applauded… loudly! For seemingly no reason. Brad smiled, one of few he's probably had lately, considering his tumultuous divorce and custody battle. For what it's worth, it sure seems like Hollywood has Brad's back.

You never know what to expect at the Globes, and neither did the night's host. At the top of the show, Jimmy Fallon's teleprompter went out. "This is great way to start the show. What do we do here?" he wondered. "I'll make up this monologue. You already have your Golden Globes moment." After everything was fixed, it was Trump time. The late-night host immediately introduced the Globes as "one of the few places left in America that still honors the popular vote," a jab at the recent election results. Next, he used a "Game of Thrones" comparison to wonder what it would be like if the villainous King Geoffrey had lived. "Well, in 12 days we're going to find out," Jimmy quipped. Jimmy also poked fun at Ryan Gosling and few other stars, but clearly Trump was in his crosshairs. In closing, he said that the votes were safe because they were tabulated by "Ernst & Young & Putin." What could go wrong?

Sister act

So, you couldn't stop looking at the gorgeous ladies handing the Golden Globes to the winners? You actually know their famous father. Those three stunners are Scarlet Rose Stallone, 14, Sistine Rose Stallone, 18, and Sophia Rose Stallone, 20. You guessed it, their dad is Sylvester Stallone. Genes, ladies and gentlemen, genes. All three Stallone sisters are serving as this year's Miss Golden Globe.

Touching tribute

While there is no "In Memoriam" segment at the Globes this year, the show still wanted to pay tribute to the late Debbie Reynolds and her daughter, writer and "Star Wars" legend Carrie Fisher. The two died one day apart in late December. Jimmy Fallon introduced a movie montage of films featuring the two powerhouses. "This past year we lost so many legends and icons," he said, "but a few weeks ago, we lost a mother and a daughter within just a couple of days and it was a terrible loss that we all felt." There was not a dry eye in the room. Debbie and Carrie, forever missed.

Daddy time!

Baby's first Globes! Mel Gibson, who's up for Best Director for "Hacksaw Ridge," arrived at the Golden Globes hand-in-hand with his pregnant girlfriend, Rosalind Ross. The two didn't speak to reporters, but they were all smiles, beaming like new parents (well, new in her case, since this is Mel's ninth kid.) She showed off her growing bump in a silver gown, while Mel kept it traditional in a tuxedo.

Record-breaker

Introducing your reigning Golden Globes champ: "La La Land." The movie is now the most awarded film in Golden Globes history with seven wins! It won in every category in which it was nominated at the Jan. 8 show. You now have permission to dance the night away, cast and crew.

Sweetest moment

Adorable overload! Dev Patel walked onto the Golden Globes stage hand-in-hand with Sunny Pawar, his 8-year-old co-star in "Lion" (okay, technically, Sunny plays a young Saroo and Dev plays the adult Saroo). After Dev introduced their nominated film, he lifted up his younger on-screen self. "This is our movie, 'Lion,'" the little guy said. Too freaking cute!

Party time handled

Ain't no party like a POTUS party. For many people, the Golden Globes is one of the biggest parties of the year. For Kerry Washington, it may not have been her biggest party of the week! Kerry was at the White House farewell party for President Obama on Friday night, er, Saturday morning. "It went really late," she told E! during its Globes red carpet pre-show. "We left at 3:30 [a.m.] and there were people still there. Obama, the "Scandal" star said, was still going full speed ahead when she left. She wasn't one to judge, telling Ryan Seacrest, "[Obama] deserves a party, don't you think?"

Chest-dressed stars

Who knew that showing of your sternum would be a thing tonight? Several stars took the plunge at the 2017 Golden Globes in black gowns that let them put their best chest forward. Kristen Bell sparkled in Jenny Packham, Mandy Moore stunned in a design by Naeem Khan, and Jessica Biel went for it in Elie Saab.

Mixing it up in menswear

Evan Rachel Wood has been to the Golden Globes six times but she didn't do something this year that she's done every other time: She didn't wear a dress. The "Westworld" star, who showed up in a well-tailored suit, made it clear she wasn't trying to "protest" dresses — she just wanted young girls to know that it's okay to "be yourself because you're worth is more than that." Another reason for her gender-bending look? She wanted to honor the late David Bowie, who would have been 70 today.

Trademark move

It didn't take long for 2017 Golden Globes host Jimmy Fallon to break into song. The opening sequence of the show had him singing a Globes-centric ditty along with several of Hollywood's biggest names (hello, Nicole Kidman and Amy Adams). During the number, Jimmy joined BFF Justin Timberlake to humorously recreate scenes from "La La Land." "Just get out there and be yourself," JT told him. Awwww…

Mama mia!

When "The Edge of Seventeen" star Hailee Steinfeld found out she was nominated for a Golden Globe, an entire airplane found out with her. The actress told Ryan Seacrest on E!'s red carpet pre-show that at the time, she was on a plane with her mom, who was live-streaming the nominations. When Hailee's name was called in the best actress in a musical or comedy film category, her mother screamed. Loudly. "The flight attendants came running over!" Just imagine how her mom will react if Hailee wins!
